12 GeV Upgrade
The first of seven superconducting spectrometer magnets being built as part of the 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade project has been delivered to Jefferson Lab. The first quadrupole magnet (Q1) for the Super High Momentum Spectrometer in Hall C is a clone of the High Momentum Spectrometer Q1 magnet; a cold iron design with a 40 cm warm bore, 11 GeV/c performance and a gradient of 7.9 T/m. It was built by Scientific Magnetics, Inc., in the UK and arrived on site on Jan. 13. Acceptance tests are underway. The Physics Division is convening an equipment readiness review for the new Q1 on Jan. 21 to assess the readiness for full, safe operation.

JSA Accepting Applications for 2015-16 Graduate Fellowships

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics
The XYZ peaks in the quarkonium spectrum found in recent experiments may be a manifestation of new quark resonances. If so, they cannot contain valence quarks only. Attempts have been made to explain them in terms of meson-meson molecules or multi-quark bound states. A new paper investigates the possibility that these peaks originate from anomalous thresholds related not to new hadrons, but to exchange forces from normal, open-flavor mesons.

What Is Safety?
If we asked 25 people, we'll get 25 different answers, all based on their education, training, experiences and perception of hazards. Part of safety is a state of mind, which forms how we approach a particular task or activity. Generally, the less experience one has with an activity or piece of equipment, the more likely that person will be wary or take extra precaution due to the uncertainty of the outcomes. The opposite is also true: Familiarity breeds contempt or less respect for a hazard. That is often when things will jump up and grab you. When you have had a bad experience, your appreciation of the hazard increases, and you again take the correct approach.
At Jefferson Lab, we try to eliminate this middle area. It should always be true, no matter your level of experience, that you to stop to think or step back to ask, "What is going to happen when I do XYZ?" Every day and almost every job has some slight variable that changes the activity.
Safety is your frame of mind and how you approach that work.

Volunteers Needed for Science Bowls on Feb. 7 and March 7
The 2015 National Science Bowl season is right around the corner, and Jefferson Lab's Science Education team is seeking volunteers to help with the two tournaments that will be held at the lab in February and March. The Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl is set for Saturday, Feb. 7, and the Virginia Regional Middle School Science Bowl will follow on Saturday, March 7. More than 50 volunteers will be needed to run each event. Most of the volunteers perform as competition moderators, rules and scientific judges, timekeepers and scorekeepers during the morning, round-robin sessions. A smaller number of volunteers are needed to run the afternoon double-elimination matches, be the on-site scientific judge who is called when a student challenges a question or answer during the competition, or help with administrative tasks and the Stay All Day Contest held in the afternoon in the Support Service Center (Building 28) classrooms. Anyone interested in more information or in volunteering may contact Jan Tyler. Volunteers may also sign up at the link for one or both events; morning shifts are 8:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m., the entire day includes 8:15 a.m.-3 p.m.
A Cookie for Your Thoughts at Quark Cafe on Jan. 21 and 22
The Quark Cafe staff is conducting its annual survey, Jan. 21-22, to assess the Jefferson Lab community's feelings about a range of cafeteria services. Fill out a survey, express your opinion and receive a free cookie. The survey form will be available in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch on Thursday, Jan. 22.
Annual Travel Workshops for Travel Coordinators and Travelers
The Annual Travel Workshop training sessions will be held during the month of February. Travel Coordinators are expected to attend a general session and all of the associated mini-workshops. Jefferson Lab Dog Training Club 2015 Classes Scheduled
Is your New Year's Resolution to reduce tension (at least in your dog's leash)? Come join the Jefferson Lab Dog Training Club for their kick-off meeting for the new year! The meeting will be held in the lobby of the Support Service Center on Monday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. Rules for dog club participation will be reviewed, so no dogs at this first meeting.
