JSA Minority/Female Undergraduate Research Assistantship
Jefferson Lab is seeking candidates for a Research Assistantship. JSA will provide funds to support a junior or senior level student at the university during the 2015-2016 academic year. This project is supported by the JSA Initiatives Fund Program, a commitment from the JSA owners, SURA and PAE Applied Technologies. These funds support programs, initiatives, and activities that further the scientific outreach, promote the science, education and technology of the Jefferson Lab and benefit the lab’s extended user community in ways that complement the lab’s basic and applied research missions. In recent years, students have used the funds to aid the exploration of 3D printed scintillator detectors for the study of field emission in accelerating cavities, as well as a presentation at the SESAPS conference on work done on the PrimEx-II Collaboration. Nominations will be accepted through April 17. For more information, visit the website.

Environment, Safety, Health & Quality

Wet Weather and Slippery Floors
Many of us shake off our umbrellas when we enter a building from the rain to remove excess rain water. Most Jefferson Lab building entryways have some form of carpet or mats to catch most of this water. However, there may be sufficient water still on the shoes or umbrellas to leave puddles along with each step into the building. On smooth flooring, these puddles can potentially cause a coworker to slip and fall.

Easy ways to prevent this scenario is to take a few extra seconds to tap the umbrella tip on the carpet (or outside before entering) or stomp the water out of your shoes a few times. Also take advantage of the plastic sleeve stands in some buildings to cover your umbrella and keep dripping water off of smooth floors. Be considerate of those who follow you into the building; your actions may prevent a serious injury.

Annual Computer User Account Audit Ends Soon
The annual computer user account audit will end soon. All supervisors and sponsors of employees/users with computer accounts at Jefferson Lab are required to review and re-authorize accounts by close of business on Monday, March 16. This audit is a critical part of maintaining an appropriate level of cyber security at Jefferson Lab. You can begin the audit through the "User Audit" link under the Personal Information section on Insight. If you need assistance during the audit, contact Chris Williamson, x6245.

CNI Systems Maintenance Period Set for March 17, 5-7 p.m.
The CNI group is currently planning a Systems Maintenance Period for Tuesday, March 17, 5-7 p.m. During this time, the group will be patching and rebooting the Zimbra mail servers. This will cause a short (5-10 minute) outage while the systems are rebooted. If you have a Zimbra account, you can expect a 5-10 minute interruption of your email access starting at around 5:30 p.m. The Zimbra environment will be back up and functioning by 6 p.m. Additionally, several of the Core CUE applications will be updated, including Firefox and Thunderbird. Some work will also be done on the lab's phone lines, but no outage is expected.  Finally, Windows and Linux patches will be released to all desktops and servers. Plan on rebooting your system to finalize the patch installation no later than Friday, March 20. As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding these maintenance activities, please contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Announcements

Jefferson Lab to Test Notification Tools During Statewide Tornado Drill
A test will be conducted of Jefferson Lab’s emergency notification systems at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17. Don't respond to the siren or any of the test notification messages; this will be a test of the lab’s emergency notification systems and not a personnel response exercise. This operational test of the lab’s severe weather/emergency communications systems will take place at the same time as the statewide Tornado Drill, planned by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. Jefferson Lab’s Tornado Siren, Site-Wide Alert system (email, page and Cisco phone text message), and the Public Address tool (verbal announcement over Cisco phone speakers) will be tested concurrently beginning at 9:45 a.m. The NOAA radios placed around the lab should also sound during this test. The entire test period shouldn't last more than four minutes. Individuals with useful feedback or observations regarding any aspect of this test are asked to email their input to Jefferson Lab’s Emergency Manager, Tina Menefee, at EmergMgr@jlab.org by 5 p.m. Friday, March 20. For more information, see the full all-staff memo.
