12 GeV Upgrade

On the Accelerator Tunnel air conditioning contract, Warwick Plumbing & Heating is preparing the concrete slabs for the chillers at grade level near each of the arcs. The chillers are scheduled for delivery in May. To coordinate with accelerator operations and the chiller delivery schedule, minor site preparation was planned for the months of March and April.

JSA Minority/Female Undergraduate Research Assistantship
Jefferson Lab is seeking candidates for a Research Assistantship. JSA will provide funds to support a junior or senior level student at the university during the 2015-2016 academic year. In recent years, students have used the funds to aid the exploration of 3D printed scintillator detectors for the study of field emission in accelerating cavities, as well as a presentation at the SESAPS conference on work done on the PrimEx-II Collaboration. HUGS Is Accepting Applications
Applications are now being accepted for the Hampton University Graduate Studies Program to be held at Jefferson Lab June 1-19. The HUGS program is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and Jefferson Science Associates, LLC. It is a summer school designed for experimental and theoretical nuclear and particle physics graduate students who have finished their coursework and have at least one year of research experience in these fields. Students who are well into a research project are also encouraged to apply. The program is simultaneously intensive, friendly and casual. All lecturers are internationally renowned and leaders in their fields. Visit the website for more information and application requirements. The application deadline is April 2.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

The first lattice QCD simulation aimed at determining the masses and decay widths of charmonium resonances above open charm threshold has been performed. The exploratory simulation of DD scattering in p-wave renders resonance parameters in agreement with the experimental resonance ψ(3770). The simulation of DD scattering in s-wave sheds light on the scalar charmonia, where no candidate for the first excited state is presently accepted.

Engineering

The Installation and Vacuum group has been busy with many activities. The group must respond to many different requests, a list that changes daily. Some of the activities the group has been working on include:
Hall A
     - Activate DP cans and VIP1C20D & VIP1H00A/B
     - Pumped down Compton laser table beam line and the electron detector
     - Preparing for February run start
     - Work with Radiation Control Department on the dump

Hall B
     - Brazing ground plates in TEDF
     - Tagger to shield wall was leaked checked / passed

Hall C
     - Work continued on Compton beamline
     - Work on large Moller #2 quad

Accelerator
     - Found and fixed Low Conductivity Water leaks in the East Arc;
     - Called in for vacuum leaks;
     - Perform pressure testing on radiofrequency separator cavities;
     - RF separator installation, LCW connected and beamline under vacuum

Road Construction
It is now spring and time for various multiple colored things to burst forth for the ground - flowers, grasses, trees and road construction signs. The various road projects around Newport News and the surrounding towns are starting again. This means road lane changes, detours, construction vehicles and road workers along the edge of our travel lanes. Each year, dozens of road construction workers are killed by vehicles driving into the work zone. We can do our part to protect our fellow citizens by following these reminders from a recent Indiana Department of Transportation notice:

• Stay alert! Look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.
• Pay attention. Work zone signs will tell drivers exactly what to expect ahead.
• Merge Early. If drivers merge as soon as they see signs, traffic will flow much more smoothly.
• Slow down! Don’t speed, there could be slowed or stopped vehicles in the construction zone.
• Keep your distance. Maintain a safe distance on all sides of the vehicle.
• Minimize distractions. The three Cs – cell phones, CDs, and coffee – are the primary cause of driver inattention.
• Plan ahead. Expect delays during construction season and allow extra travel time, or select an alternate route.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Guest Print Server Planned Maintenance
The CNI group will be taking the print server, confsrv, which services the JLab guest network, offline for maintenance for a short period on Monday, March 30, 5:30 - 6 p.m. The system will be back up and servicing print jobs no later than 6 p.m. If you have any questions or concerns about this outage, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Training to Sponsor Dale Carnegie Course: Effective Communications and Human Relations
Human Resources plans to sponsor a 12-week course to be offered on-site by trainers from Dale Carnegie. The course is aimed at helping employees to learn to strengthen interpersonal relationships, manage stress and handle fast-changing workplace conditions and to be better equipped to perform as a persuasive communicator, problem-solver and focused leader. Reminder: RadCon Services Limited March 25-April 17
The Jefferson Lab Radiation Control (RadCon) Operations Group, Electronics Group, Training Group, Analytical Lab and Dosimetry Group will be moving from their current location (in the RadCon trailers near the Accelerator entrance/Guard Post) to the ARC Library (first floor) on April 8. 2015 E-Commerce Vendor Fair
All members of the Jefferson Lab community are invited to the annual JSA E-Commerce Vendor Fair scheduled for 9 a.m.–1 p.m. on Thursday, March 26. The theme is safety, so come ready to ask vendors about their safety information, supplies and equipment. Vendor displays and tables will be set up in the CEBAF Center atrium and room F113. Student Projects, Volunteer Mentors Needed for High School Interns
Eight outstanding high school students have been selected to participate in the lab's High School Summer Honors Program, which will be held June 22 – July 31. Critical to the success of their internship experience are projects for the students with mentors who can oversee one or more students as they carry out their work. The students are currently in the 11th and 12th grades and have expressed interest in pursuing scientific and technical careers. Lab scientists, engineers and other technical managers who are interested in serving as a mentor to high-achieving high school students and have a project, or any number of small projects that can be accomplished over the summer, are asked to contact Brita Hampton with a description of the work to be assigned by May 1.
