12 GeV Upgrade
Civil construction for the 12 GeV Upgrade project has resumed with the backup cooling towers for the low conductivity water (LCW) systems at the North and South Access Buildings. This work was combined with the Utilities Infrastructure Modernization’s cooling tower work at various locations around the accelerator site. The prime contractor is Warwick Plumbing & Heating of Newport News. WPH has done various projects at the Lab before including Hall D and Technology and Engineering Development Facility project mechanical work and the Central Helium Liquefier-1 replacement cooling towers. The 12 GeV backup towers were delivered last week and set in place on the existing structure steel platforms. The solicitation for the last of the 12 GeV Project Civil scope, Tunnel Air Conditioning, has been posted with proposals due on Oct 30. The vendor site visit for this solicitation was held Oct 16.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics
The advantage and disadvantage of different dispersive representations to treat three-body decays are presented in a new paper. In particular, a toy model has been used to analyze the sensitivity of the solutions to the left-hand cut for the two-body scattering amplitude. The change of the Watson theorem produced by re-scattering effects in the three-body final state is also discussed.
Engineering
In the last month, Electrical Engineering Systems in the Engineering Division completed several major milestones. The DC Power group completed their final piece of the 12 GeV accelerator upgrade, as did the Instrumentation and Controls group. The Safety System group completed their certification process, paving the way for turn on of equipment. With these final items completed, 100 percent of the accelerator scope of the 12 GeV construction project is now finished. Much effort has also gone into restoring equipment to operational status so that accelerator startup can take place. The completion of UIM power outages and cryogenic system recovery allowed the turning on of the 53 radiofrequency accelerating systems and the extraction RF separators, the final EES pieces needed to begin beam operations and tune up. Now that beam is back, the effort will be to optimize all systems so recovery, commissioning and physics operation can resume in the 12 GeV era.

Prepare your Vehicles Now for Winter
You may have seen notices on television, in newspaper articles or emails from motor vehicle organizations reminding you to prepare your vehicle for winter driving. Here are some basic tips for getting your vehicle ready to go over the river and through the woods this winter:

Check the pressure and tread depth of your tires, including the spare;

Check fluid levels and condition of fluids, such freeze-resistant windshield washer fluid, engine coolant (antifreeze) levels, brake fluid, etc.;

Test the blowers for windshield and rear window defroster/defogger;
-
Check the condition of windshield wipers;
-
Review the contents of your vehicle's emergency kit for winter; and
-
Look though your vehicle's owner's manual for additional recommended items to check.
Lastly, if your vehicle is covered by snow or ice in a winter storm, be sure to clean off all of the windows, headlights, signal lights and brake lights before getting behind the wheel. The Virginia Department of Transportation offers additional winter driving safety tips.

Come Out and Enjoy JAG Oktoberfest!
Jefferson Lab employees, their immediate family members, users and students are invited to the Jefferson Lab Activities Group Oktoberfest scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 29, 3-6 p.m. in the field behind the SURA Residence Facility. A variety of foods will be available, as well as games and activities, including a Cornhole Tournament (must register in advance, see brief), Bounce House, Treasure in a Haystack, Pumpkin Toss and Candy Jar Guessing Game. Everyone attending is encouraged to wear a costume. Also, the winning raffle tickets will be drawn for the iPad and two iPad mini’s that are part of the lab's United Way fund-raising campaign; tickets are available for purchase noon-1 p.m. through Wednesday, Oct. 29, in the CEBAF Center lobby.
Volunteers Critical to Event Success
Volunteer participation is critical to the event's success. More than a dozen volunteer positions still need to be filled, ranging from replenishing food to assisting with children’s games and field activities to distributing ID bracelets and clean up. Volunteer for just one hour and party the other two! The best volunteer spots are taken early, so sign up today.
Food Drive Begins at Oktoberfest
Donations in support of the local Virginia Peninsula Foodbank will be accepted at Oktoberfest. To participate, bring an unopened, canned or boxed, nonperishable food item to the Oktoberfest. Food donation drop barrels will also be available in the ARC, SSC, CEBAF Center and TED Building lobbies after the event and until Nov. 21.

Share Your Photo for Veteran’s Day Tribute
Jefferson Lab will again recognize its veterans on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, with a small display. This year, a photo exhibit of lab veterans in uniform is being prepared to highlight employees’ service. If you are a veteran and would like to participate, email or bring in your military service photo to Mike Robbins, CEBAF Center room C222, before Oct. 31. These photos can be of any time during your service, from boot camp to retirement. Under the photo, your name, branch of service, and years of service will be displayed.

Jefferson Lab now offers a link to Tickets at Work, a website that offers employee discounts and corporate prices for entertainment.
