12 GeV Upgrade

The vacuum jackets are being welded into place on the hex beams connecting the six coils of the Torus magnet for CLAS12 in Hall B. Next steps include adding the cold to warm supports, routing instrumentation wiring, and adding the jumpers between pairs of beams, followed by transferring the weight of the magnet to the main support legs and removal of the assembly spit, which has been used to rotate the six sectors individually to positions where assembly can be done. The work at FNAL to wind and pot the coils and at Jefferson Lab to place the coils into cryostats has concluded, ending these major steps in Torus magnet construction.  The vendor contracted to build the distribution can for the cryogenics for both the Torus and Solenoid plans delivery in November. The fabrication of the cryogenics control can, which will serve as the Torus Service Tower, is in its final assembly stage.  Fabrication of the instrumentation chassis and racks, together with the cable harnesses and needed firmware, is progressing. The vendor for the Solenoid magnet for CLAS12 has begun winding the first of the two “Intermediate” coils. The winding bobbin for the fifth, or “Shield,” coil is ordered.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

Calculations of two-nucleon interactions in lattice QCD are significantly more challenging than two-meson calculations. The Hadron Spectrum Collaboration has presented for the first time rigorous calculations of two-nucleon P-, D- and F-wave scattering, using unique spatial sources designed to couple to higher partial wave states.  This work represents a proof of principle demonstration of the technology needed to understand more involved calculations of three and more nucleons, as well as two-nucleon matrix elements needed for understanding experimental probes of the Standard Model and searches for physics beyond.

Engineering

As we get closer to fall beam operations, the Electrical Engineering Group is nearing completion on a number of projects, as well as performing hot checkout (HCO) on all accelerator systems. The Safety Systems Group is currently in the midst of Personnel Safety System (PSS) certifications. This is a two-week-long process, is worked on swing shift, and checks the accelerator and system components for readiness. The DC Power group have installed all but one of the new 'Dogleg' power supplies. These upgraded units, designed and built entirely at Jefferson Lab, provide the increased current to the pathlength adjustment magnets required for the higher beam energy of 12 GeV. The RF group are currently testing the new separator cavities, which will allow the beam to be used for multi-hall operations moving forward. The Instrumentation and Controls group is continuing maintenance and checkout of CEBAF systems, as well as working to get the LERF (formerly FEL) systems operational. As always, our Support Services group is providing fab shop and electrician support where needed around site as well as working in Hall B.

Environment, Health, Safety and Quality

Unsafe Conditions
In addition to unsafe acts, unsafe conditions in the work environment can also contribute to accidents or injuries. Everyone should be aware of the potential for these conditions and take action when they occur to correct them. Some common unsafe conditions include:

  • Hazardous tools, materials or equipment (such as the wrong tools, tools in poor condition, etc.);
  • Poor housekeeping;
  • Poor storage/placement of materials;
  • Protruding items - wires, parts, bolts, nails, burrs; and
  • Unanticipated movement.

The Safety Warden walk-thru program brings a fresh set of eyes to the work environment to search for such issues. Too often, people who work in the area or are doing a job unconsciously accept unsafe workplace changes or accept unsafe conditions they see every day. This is sometimes called “normalization of deviations.” By taking corrective action immediately, we do not let this deviation become part of the work environment.

Flu Vaccines Offered by Appointment
Occupational Medicine is now accepting appointments from Jefferson Lab staff for Influenza vaccinations. If you would like to be vaccinated, contact Occupational Medicine at x7539 to schedule an appointment. Keep in mind that for 15 minutes after vaccination you should remain at Jefferson Lab, in the presence of other people and avoid safety-sensitive activities, including driving. Red Cross Blood Drive Scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 16
The next American Red Cross Blood Drive will take place Friday, Oct. 16, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F113. New and repeat donors are encouraged to attend. Tornado Warning Siren Test Set for Friday, Oct. 2
Jefferson Lab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 2. Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise. Individuals planning to be in the Central Materials Storage Area (where the siren is located) while the test is taking place must have with them and wear two layers of hearing protection.

Reminder: All-Hands Meeting on Oct. 1
Mont will conduct an all-hands meeting on Thursday, Oct. 1, in the CEBAF Center auditorium. He plans to provide the Jefferson Lab community with an update on safety, workforce diversity, cyber security and recent federal cyber breaches, infrastructure and the campus plan, funding & budget status, and major activities including the 12 GeV Upgrade status, the fall accelerator running schedule, LCLS II work, the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) Long Range Plan due out in mid-October, and the Jefferson Lab proposal for a future Electron-Ion Collider and other items. Vacation Donation Program Open Enrollment Ends Friday
This year’s open enrollment session for the Vacation Donation Program will be offered through close of business on Friday, Oct. 2. During open enrollment, eligible employees may anonymously donate vacation time in increments of four (4) hours. The program requires donors to maintain a minimum vacation balance of 80 hours after the donation. All donated hours will be held or use by eligible employees who are approved to become beneficiaries of the program. To participate, fill out a Request to Donate Vacation via the Vacation Donation Program application. More program details are available on the Human Resources/Benefits website. Jefferson Lab to Kick off 2015 United Way Campaign with Picnic on Oct. 2
Jefferson Lab’s pledge campaign to support the annual fundraising appeal for the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula kicks off with a picnic 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2. The fundraiser picnic will take place in the CEBAF Center lobby and cafeteria dining area. Hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, and assorted canned soda and chips will be available for $1 per item to raise money for the United Way, and will be served by Jefferson Lab senior management. Radworker I and Radworker II Classes Offered in October
A full-day Radiation Worker I class is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 12, and a half-day Radiation Worker II class is scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 20. The classes will be taught in the ARC, exact location TBD. To attend the class, register through the Learning Management System or by contacting Maya Keller at x6021.
