12 GeV Upgrade

Late last month, the new spectrometer in Hall C was rotated to its maximum angle relative to the electron beam for the first time. This is a triumph for those who designed, surveyed and installed the Super High Momentum Spectrometer, since it must come very close to the curved wall of Hall C. After Jefferson Lab staff removed or relocated a final few items from the wall, the SHMS was rotated to a scattering angle of 40.2 degrees. The design specification calls for reaching at least 40 degrees.

A leak that was previously reported in Q2, one of three SHMS magnets under construction in France, was found to be in the leak-test equipment, not in the magnet. The Q3 magnet coil is inside its helium vessel awaiting further electrical tests before the vessel is permanently welded closed. The vendor continues to lose time due to problems with manufacturing the liquid-nitrogen-cooled thermal shields. Most of the shield pieces are now ready, but fabrication of the inner shield for the dipole remains to be done, as does the final testing of the shields for all three magnets. The outer-most part of each magnet is its vacuum vessel, and good progress is being made on all three of these.

The closure welding is complete on the vacuum jackets of the hex beams connecting the six coils of the CLAS12 Torus magnet that is being assembled in Hall B. Next steps include a detailed survey, followed by transferring the weight of the magnet to the main support legs. The major work in January and February will include installing the cryogenics service tower for the Torus and connecting it to the distribution can for cryogens. The distribution can fabrication is on track for delivery in January. The fabrication of the Torus Service Tower is in its final assembly stage. The Torus and Solenoid magnet power supplies have completed full current tests. Installation of the control cable harnesses and needed firmware is progressing. The vendor for the CLAS12 Solenoid is preparing for epoxy impregnation of both of the “Intermediate” coils. The bobbin for the fifth coil, or “Shield” coil, is expected to be delivered to the Solenoid vendor by mid-December, with the Shield coil to be wound and then epoxy-impregnated by late January.

JSA Thesis Prize Call for Nominations
Theses completed during calendar year 2015 are eligible for the 2015 JSA Thesis Prize, as well as theses completed during the last quarter of 2014 (if they haven't been submitted before). The thesis prize submissions will be judged initially by members of UGBoD, followed by a panel of independent experts to select the final winner. Criteria for evaluation include quality of the written thesis, contribution of the student to the work, and contribution to Jefferson Lab physics/community. This project is supported by the JSA Initiatives Fund Program, a commitment from the JSA owners, SURA and PAE Applied Technologies. Initiatives Funds support programs, initiatives, and activities that further the scientific outreach, promote the science, education and technology of the Jefferson lab and benefit the lab's extended user community in ways that complement the Lab's basic and applied research missions. The nomination deadline is Feb. 15. For nomination package details and submission instructions, see the webpage linked above.

JSA Postdoctoral Research Prize Call for Nominations
Nominations for the JSA Postdoctoral Research Prize are now being accepted. Nominated scientists will be judged on his/her record of accomplishment in physics, a planned high-impact Jefferson Lab physics program, proposed use of the research grant, and promise of further accomplishments in the Jefferson Lab research fields in the future. The prize will be in the form of a research grant. The funds can be used for travel, supplies or equipment in support of the proposed research plan. This project is supported by the JSA Initiatives Fund Program. The deadline for nomination packages is Jan. 22. For nomination package details and submission instructions, see the webpage.

AIP Congressional Science Fellowship Program Now Accepting Applications
The American Institute of Physics, in partnership with the Acoustical Society of America, annually sponsors one scientist to spend a year providing analytical expertise and scientific advice to Congress. The program enables scientists to broaden their experience through direct involvement with the legislative and policy processes. Fellowships are for one year, usually September through August. Following orientation, Fellows interview with congressional and committee offices to find a placement where they wish to serve. Fellows are expected to be capable of handling varied assignments, both technical and non-technical. During their term, Fellows are expected to work full-time at their assignment. Applications are due Jan. 15. More information and application materials can be found on the AIP website.

2016 L’Oréal USA For Women in Science Fellowship Program Now Accepting Applications
The 2016 L’Oréal USA For Women in Science fellowship program is now accepting applications. In the U.S., the For Women In Science fellowship program awards five postdoctoral women scientists annually with grants of $60,000 each. Applicants are selected from a variety of fields, including the life and physical/material sciences, technology (including computer science), engineering and mathematics. The application and more information about the L’Oréal USA For Women in Science program can be found at www.lorealusa.com/forwomeninscience. Applications are due Friday, Feb. 5.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

IT Maintenance Day Set for Tuesday, Dec. 15, 5-10 p.m.
The IT Division is planning a maintenance period for 5-10 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15. During this maintenance period, all MIS applications will be unavailable while patches are installed and the systems are rebooted. All MIS applications should be back up and available by 10 p.m. Also, all Common User Environment-managed web severs and login servers will be rebooted to finalize patch installations.
