12 GeV Upgrade

Hall B is prepping for the installation of the Torus magnet support legs. Up to this point, the Torus assembly has been taking place with the Torus on a “spit.” This allowed for rotation of the magnet, which increased efficiency and safety during this phase of construction. The legs are the permanent support and will be installed in the near future. Hall C continues incremental testing and measurements of the horizontal bend (HB) magnet. This activity is part of the final acceptance tests of this superconducting magnet.

Environment, Health, Safety and Quality

Cold Stress
On Tuesday, Jan. 5, Jefferson Lab reached a cold stress temperature of about 10º F at the start of the work day. We often think of cold stress in terms of the wind chill factor, where any wind makes the air temperature feel colder than it is. That is due to the fact that the wind is extracting heat from our bodies.

There are several steps that Jefferson Lab workers can take to prevent cold stress. For instance, for the low temperatures experienced on Tuesday, proper mitigation techniques people need to follow include dressing in layers, wearing gloves (insulated or layered), wearing a hat, and whenever possible, staying out of the wind or taking breaks to go inside a building to warm up. Drinking warm liquids will also help (however, despite the short-term "warm feeling" you can get from alcohol, drinking alcohol is more detrimental than beneficial to staying warm). One can also become dehydrated quickly in the cold air, so also remember to keep up with your hourly water consumption.

As always, if you are not feeling well or are having trouble with the cold, inform your supervisor and report to Occupational Medicine in Support Service Center (Bldg. 28) in room 22C for help. For more information about cold stress/wind chill considerations at Jefferson Lab, consult ES&H Manual Chapter 6670 Heat and Cold Stress Mitigation Program.
