12 GeV Upgrade

Now that the Horizontal Bend magnet is running at full current, the magnetic fields it generates are being "mapped" (carefully measured at each position in a three-dimensional grid). Detailed knowledge of the main field within the bore of the magnet is needed, so that physicists can interpret the data that comes from the spectrometer during experiments. It is also necessary to have a good measurement of the field outside this particular magnet, because it can deflect the primary electron beam during some experiments. Devices that minimize or counteract this deflection must be designed now, using the measured field as a guide.

In France, the repair of the damaged inner thermal shield of the dipole magnet was completed relatively quickly, so the vendor chose not to divert attention to making early measurements of this magnet's field. The entire shield is made up of an inner cylinder, an outer cylinder, and two endcaps that connect the cylinders. Both the inner and outer surfaces of the shield assembly get a covering of aluminized mylar super insulation -- like many layers of 'space blanket'. All of these parts are in place now, and welding has begun to hold them permanently in position. The pipes that supply liquid nitrogen to cool the shields are being joined by welding, too. Once they have been certified leak-free, the thick outer vacuum vessel will be sealed by welding its two endcaps in place. At this point, in just a few weeks, the dipole factory assembly will be finished and it will start a series of magnetic and leak tests before being readied for shipment to Jefferson Lab's Hall C. The first of the two identical quadrupole magnets, Q2 and Q3, is only several weeks behind the dipole in the same fabrication process. All of its parts are ready and are being put together in a trial fit now. Some of the shield subassemblies for the last quadrupole magnet still need final welding details for mounting brackets, and a final leak check. They will arrive at the magnet vendor's factory only after space becomes available.

Publications Refresher Course Offered Feb. 23
The next Publications Training and Refresher course will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 9 a.m. in CEBAF Center room F224-225. A brief introduction to the Department of Energy's Public Access Plan and how it affects Jefferson Lab will be presented. In this session, authors will learn how to submit manuscripts to the Publications Review and Approval System, how to make recommended revisions to papers during the signature process, and how to add the relevant information once the paper is published. Apply Now for the Graduate Fellowship Program at Jefferson Lab
JSA is now accepting applications for the JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program for the 2016-2017 academic year. Each fellowship will provide the awardee's home institution with a $10,000 stipend. The awardee's home institution must agree to provide the remaining research assistant stipend from institutional or research funds. An additional $2,000 supplemental stipend is provided to the awardee's home institution for the graduate student. Conference travel support is also available for use during the fellowship period. JSA Offers Sabbatical and Research Leave Support at Jefferson Lab

JSA Thesis Prize Call for Nominations
Theses completed during calendar year 2015 are eligible for the 2015 JSA Thesis Prize, as well as theses completed during the last quarter of 2014 (if they haven't been submitted before). This project is supported by the JSA Initiatives Fund Program, a commitment from the JSA owners, SURA and PAE Applied Technologies. Initiatives Funds support programs, initiatives, and activities that further the scientific outreach, promote the science, education and technology of the Jefferson Lab and benefit the lab's extended user community in ways that complement the lab's basic and applied research missions. Dangling Items from the Head/Neck and Rotating Equipment
This is just a reminder that loose and dangling items that may be worn to work have no place on your person when you are working around industrial or rotating equipment, due to the danger of these items getting caught in the equipment and providing a safety hazard. This applies to any powered tool that is rotating, traveling linearly or reciprocating. Many of these tools move faster than a person's reaction time.

What is a dangling item? Hair long enough to stay vertical when the head is tipped, long necklaces, a badge lanyard, chains, reading glasses draped around the neck and many other items. It is vital to your wellbeing to remove these items altogether or secure them so that they can not be grabbed by equipment. Prevention is simple: Get the hair tucked securely up out of the way or take off (not just flip around) the items from around the neck.

This is an especially important reminder for those who supervise new employees or mentor students, workers who may have never before been exposed to this type of work environment: dangling items have no place in a workplace where power tools and machinery with moving parts are present.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

IT Maintenance Day Set for Tuesday, Feb. 16
There will be an IT Division maintenance period on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 5-10 p.m. During this time, there may be brief outages to various central services while updates are applied. Also, all of the MIS applications will be down starting at around 8 p.m. and until 10 p.m. for system and database upgrades. Be sure to plan your work accordingly. Windows and Linux patches will also be released to all desktops and servers, necessitating the reboot of some servers. Thus, there will likely be brief outages of some central services overnight while these systems are rebooted to finalize these updates. Updates to the Core Common User Environment software will be released to the site, as well. Finally, plan on rebooting your desktop Windows or Linux system no later than Friday, Feb. 19, to finalize patch installations on your local system. User Account Audit Beginning Feb. 15
The annual Computer User Account Audit will begin on Monday, Feb. 15, and end on Monday, March 14. All supervisors and sponsors of users with computer accounts at Jefferson Lab are required to review and re-authorize these accounts annually. This audit is a critical part of maintaining an appropriate level of cyber security at the laboratory. If you sponsor someone with a computer user account at Jefferson Lab, you will receive an email on Feb. 15 with information on how to complete your user audit. Jefferson Lab Entrance Closure on Feb. 15: Lawrence Drive
Hampton Roads Sanitation District is installing a 30” sewer force main on Department of Energy property adjacent to Jefferson Avenue. One section of the line will be installed just outside the accelerator site fence and along Jefferson Avenue. Then, installation will proceed under Lawrence Drive from the intersection of Lawrence and Jefferson Avenue and will stretch all the way to Hogan Drive. Beginning Feb. 15, the Jefferson Lab entrance at Lawrence Drive and Jefferson Avenue will be closed for two months for installation of the new force main. All traffic will enter and exit Jefferson Lab via Hogan Drive during this period. If you have any questions about this work, contact Rusty Sprouse at x7589.

2016 Annual T-Shirt Design Contest Starts Feb. 15
Put your creative talents to work and submit the winning design for the 31st Annual Jefferson Lab T-shirt Contest. Entries will be accepted Feb. 15 through March 11. Each submission must include a front “pocket-size” and back design. "Jefferson Lab," "DOE," "JSA, LLC," and "2016" must be included in the design.  Resubmission of previous non-winning designs is welcome. To enter, submit your design, username, division and telephone (contact) number online. The lab community will vote on designs March 14-25. The contest winner(s) will be revealed at the Jefferson Lab Run-A-Round on May 4. 

JLab Golf League Forming for 2016 Season
The Jefferson Lab Golf League is open to all current staff, retirees, users and their spouses. All levels of play are welcomed. A 2016 season organizational meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 22, in CEBAF Center room F113, noon-1 p.m. No food will be served at the meeting, but attendees are welcome to bring their lunch or purchase something from the cafeteria. January Blood Drive a Success!
Jefferson Lab donors made a significant contribution to the American Red Cross with January's Blood Drive! A total of 40 productive pints were collected, exceeding our goal of 38.
