Visitors were able to see many of the unique research facilities and learn about the leading-edge projects underway at the lab, as well as participate in a variety of science education activities and catch the ever-popular Liquid Nitrogen Demonstration. Plans are underway for the next Open House, on April 30, 2016.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator, or Jefferson Lab, will hold an open house for the public on Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
It is an opportunity for people of all ages to spend the day exploring this world-class research facility. Among the features will be tours, exhibits, hands-on activities and interactive displays and demonstrations, such as the ever-popular Liquid Nitrogen Show. Visitors will be able to see much of the lab, learn about its research and the technological advances being made.
Staff and visiting scientists will be on-hand to discuss the research underway at the lab, the lab's particle detection and supercomputing capabilities, as well as its particle-acceleration capability (superconducting radiofrequency), a technology for which there is growing interest in the U.S. and abroad.
A number of local universities, museums, government agencies, other Department of Energy labs, and other organizations are being invited to present activities and information on their scientific endeavors.
The open house will be free of charge and held rain or shine. Families, individuals and groups are welcome. Parking will be free and lots will open at 8:30 a.m. No vehicles will be admitted to the parking lots after 2 p.m.
The event will be spread out over several buildings and outdoor areas and involves a lot of walking, taking flights of concrete stairs and walking down and back up rough, inclined truck ramps. In some areas, visitors will walk on compacted gravel or dirt surfaces instead of pavement. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and sunscreen or a brimmed hat and protective clothing.
Free shuttle buses will be available to carry visitors between most of the tour stops. Nearly all areas will be accessible by wheelchair. Photos and video recording are welcome.
