12 GeV Upgrade

Installation work in Hall B is very busy and presents many overhead hazards. Detector work is proceeding with the cabling of the Low Threshold Cerenkov Counter. Torus magnet activities include installation of the cabling raceways as well as additional infrastructure and support services, such as Low Conductivity Water, electrical, cryogenic piping and gas systems. With all of these overhead activities, it is important that precautions be taken to prevent tools and equipment from falling. Examples of solutions that will reduce risk are to tether tooling when possible, organize and safely store/transport tools and materials, and maintain good housekeeping in your work area.

Publications Refresher Course Offered March 28
Curious about the Department of Energy's Public Access Plan and how it affects Jefferson Lab? Attend the next Publications Training and Refresher course to be held on Monday, March 28, at 9 a.m. in CEBAF Center room F224-225. In addition to a brief introduction to the public access plan, authors will learn how to submit manuscripts to the Publications Review and Approval System, how to make recommended revisions to papers during the signature process, and how to add the relevant information once the paper is published. Plan to attend and R.S.V.P. to Kim Edwards by Friday, March 25.

JSA Offers Sabbatical and Research Leave Support at Jefferson Lab
JSA is now accepting applications for the JSA/JLab Sabbatical and Research Leave Support Program for the 2016-2017 academic year, with support beginning as early as summer 2016. The program is funded by the JSA Initiatives Fund. Application materials for the program are due by March 31. Visit the website for an application form and proposal requirements. Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

The phenomenological success of the systematic application of chiral effective field theory (χEFT) to the electromagnetic and weak observables of light nuclei has been remarkable. In a recent review article, the background and early application of chiral Lagrangians to nuclear current operators, and G.E. Brown's role as an initiator of this approach, are reviewed. A summary of the current status of nuclear χEFT and a set of illustrative examples of its application to electroweak observables are also provided.

Engineering

The installation group has completed many tasks to support the Hall C Dump upgrade, including:

• N2 line upgrade,
• venting installation in Bldg 95,
• N2 line extension,
• helium tube installation,
• isolation wall installation,
• vacuum tube installation, and
• installation of camera boxes and associated mirror boxes and periscope tubes.

Additionally, the Installation group installed cable trays for the Upgrade Injector Test Facility, acid flushed arc box supplies and fabricated hoses for Hall B Torus power supply leads.

The Vacuum group has completed the Hall C beamline at the cantilevered stand and bridge section, including adding a foil target at the end of the superharp girder to support the upcoming four-day run. They have also handled the purchase and assembly of the Hall B Torus vac system and completed assembly/installation of the tune mode viewer and calibration puck assemblies for the Hall C dump vac tube. Vacuum continues to support CEBAF during the current run.

Both groups supported a quick turn removal/re-installation of the East Arc Dipole MJC5A14 from CEBAF.

Pressure and Vacuum System Owners and Design Authorities: Required SAF 130C Training To Be Held on March 17
SAF 130C, Pressure and Vacuum Systems Owner Training, is a required course for all Pressure and Vacuum System Owners and Design Authorities. The training covers general safe operation and maintenance techniques, as well as the specific requirements of System Owners defined in the new Pressure and Vacuum System Safety Supplement. Others who might benefit from the training include operators and supervisors of technicians working on pressure systems.

Sign up now for the SAF130C, Pressure Systems Owner Training session scheduled for Thursday, March 17, 1-3:30 p.m. in the CEBAF Center auditorium. The class is being led by Hall D Chief Engineer, Tim Whitlatch.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

IT Systems Maintenance Day Set for Tuesday, March 15
The IT Division is scheduling a Systems Maintenance period on this Tuesday, March 15, 5-7 p.m. During this maintenance period, the Indico web server and software will be upgraded to a new version. The Indico web server will be back up and available no later than 8 p.m. Also, several core CUE apps will be updated and released, and Windows, Linux and Mac patches will be released to all servers and desktops. In order to finalize this patch installation, all web servers and many Linux servers will be scheduled for reboot overnight. Any outages will be brief during these reboots. Plan on rebooting your desktop to finalize patch installations no later than Friday, March 18. Look for New Return to Vendor Form
On Thursday, March 10, The MIS group will roll out an updated version of the Return to Vendor form. This change should have minimal impact to users, but there will be a few noticeable differences in the new software. The layout will now reflect the layout on the main Jefferson Lab website, and there are some enhancements for administrative users. Research Assistantship Program Now Taking Nominations
Jefferson Lab is seeking candidates for the 2016-2017 Minority/Female Undergraduate Research Assistantship (MFURA) program. Through the MFURA program, a minority or female junior or senior level undergraduate student will work on a Jefferson Lab-related project at his or her university during the academic year. Students must be nominated by university professors with whom the students would conduct the research. Nominations will be accepted through May 2. For information on the eligibility requirements or to nominate a student, see the linked webpage. MFURA is funded by the JSA Initiatives Fund Program, a commitment from the JSA owners, SURA and PAE Applied Technologies.

Last Chance to Sign Up for Free Sentara Optima Health Screenings on March 23
Optima Health is offering free and confidential health screenings at Jefferson Lab on March 23. The 10-minute screenings will take place in CEBAF Center, room F113. At this screening, you will learn more about blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes risk, Body Mass Index, tobacco cessation, and the benefits of regular physical activity. This free service is open to Jefferson Lab employees as well as users and subcontractors. An appointment is required for this screening. The deadline for making an appointment for this free service is Thursday, March 10. Deadline Approaches for 2016 Annual T-Shirt Design Contest
Put your creative talents to work and submit the winning design for the 31st Annual Jefferson Lab T-shirt Contest. Entries will be accepted through March 11. Each submission must include a front "pocket-size" and back design. "Jefferson Lab," "DOE," "JSA, LLC," and "2016" must be included in the design.  Resubmission of previous non-winning designs is welcome. To enter, submit your design, username, division and telephone (contact) number online. The lab community will vote on designs March 14-25. The contest winner(s) will be revealed at the Jefferson Lab Run-A-Round on May 4.

Property Validation Deadline Approaches
The Property Validation period is coming to a close on March 31, and less than half of the Jefferson Lab staff have completed the inventory. National Instruments Offers LabVIEW Course April 12
For those already using LabView and wanting to learn about embedded systems, National Instruments (NI) is offering an Introduction to Real-Time and FPGA on the RIO Eval Kit. This system is the underlying technology of all NI cRIO products, and uses an identical workflow to all of NI’s other FPGA-enabled hardware, and it also runs the NI Real-Time Linux real-time operating system. The course will be held Tuesday, April 12, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F326.
