NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Jefferson Science Associates, the operations and management contractor for the Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, presented its 2015 Outstanding Small Business Subcontractor Award to Carr Electrical Technology, Inc. of Newport News at a ceremony on June 1.

Carr Electrical Technology, Inc. was selected to receive this award based on the excellent quality, value, timeliness, and commitment to safety exhibited in its work at the laboratory during fiscal year 2015.  Carr Electric completed a dozen work orders for the laboratory during the year and has been a small business subcontractor for JSA since 2012.

Paul Powers, the Facilities Electrical Systems and Energy manager at Jefferson Lab, commended the company’s ability to get each job done in a very professional manner, on time or ahead of schedule, and in some cases, in very tight space constraints, while meeting the stringent safety requirements that are essential to laboratory operations.

Jefferson Lab’s Chief Operating Officer, Michael Maier, presented the award to Carr Electrical Technology Manager, Pamela Atkins, and her staff.  Maier said, “Jefferson Lab places a high priority on using local small businesses and we are very pleased to recognize those that deliver outstanding products or services. The laboratory has a large and growing positive economic impact here and buying local is another way we contribute to our community.”

Mike Epps, representing the Department of Energy Site Office, congratulated the company on earning the award and for its part in supporting Jefferson Lab’s research mission. “Your contribution to DOE and Jefferson Lab is important, and we appreciate the good work that you do,” he said.

Danny Lloyd, JSA Small Business Program manager, described the process used to select the award recipient: “Winning this award is tough,” he remarked. “More than 350 small companies do business with Jefferson Lab and were eligible for this award. Based on performance, the top 18 were identified, and then the final four. A panel of laboratory employees, called the small business advocacy team, was convened to review the selections and decide on the top company.”

Any small business, including women-owned, veteran-owned, service-disabled veteran, HUBZone, or disadvantaged business doing work for Jefferson Lab in a given fiscal year may be considered for the award. The lab has presented the award annually since 1991.
