12 GeV Upgrade
Hall C staff recently finished installation of the scattering chamber, both of the Super High Momentum Spectrometer sieve-slit stations and of the complete SHMS vacuum system through the first two magnets. Permanent installation of the cryogenic gas lines has advanced as far as possible before the final magnets arrive. These three remaining magnets have experienced good progress recently. The Q2 quadrupole has just passed its pressure tests, and now the thick final welds for the outer vacuum vessel are being made. A preliminary seal weld is in place on the dipole so that it can be pumped-out and undergo its pressure tests in the coming days. Seal welding, pressure testing, and final welding of the Q3 magnet will come next.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics
Flavor singlet contributions to nucleon matrix elements are a major challenge for lattice QCD calculations, as they require the computation of the trace of a large matrix which is only implicitly known through the quark propagator. A new paper describes a numerical method that allows for efficient computation of such traces. This method relies on projecting out the lowest singular vectors of the Dirac matrix and improves over the previous "Hierarchical Probing" method that allowed precise computations of strange quark contributions to nucleon electromagnetic form factors.

IT Division Maintenance Period Set for Tuesday, July 19, 5-10 p.m.
The IT Division is planning a maintenance period for 5-10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19. During this time, there will be a network outage, while a network switch is replaced, in portions of the Test Lab, Bldg. 58 (Test Lab south annex and the processes support buildings). All network tasks should be complete by 7 p.m. There will also be a short email outage while IT makes changes to email routing. All email should be held at the remote servers while this work is being completed, so no email will be lost. All email routing should be up and working correctly by no later than 7 p.m. IT will also release Linux and Windows patches to all Jefferson Lab-managed desktops and servers and will reboot central servers overnight to finalize these patch installations. These reboots may result in short outages to some non-critical central services. Plan on rebooting your desktop no later than Friday, July 22, in order to finalize patch installations on your desktop. Finally, IT staff will release patches to Core Common User Environment software, such as Adobe Acrobat and Java. Be sure to install these updates when prompted. Last Chance to R.S.V.P. for July 21 Symposium to Honor Claus Rode
On Thursday, July 21, Jefferson Lab will hold a symposium titled: Project Highlights from 50 Years in the DOE Office of Science: A scientific symposium in honor of Claus Rode. The symposium will highlight a selection of high-profile projects completed in the Department of Energy’s Office of Science over the past 50 years. The character and execution of scientific projects evolved significantly during this time. This period covers the distinguished career of Claus Rode, who was involved in all of the projects to be discussed, while working at several Office of Science laboratories. The Jefferson Lab community is invited to attend; reservations are required. Individuals planning to attend, who haven’t yet R.S.V.P.’d, are asked to email Pat Stroop at stroop@jlab.org no later than close of business on July 14. The symposium is scheduled for 3-5:30 p.m. on July 21 in the CEBAF Center auditorium and will be followed by a reception in the lobby.
Hall C Safety Awareness Training Updated: Current Training Expires Sept. 1
Due to the new configuration of Hall C, the Safety Awareness Training for the hall, SAF112, has been updated. This training will expire on Sept. 1 for anyone who last completed this training before May 1, 2016. To take the updated training, first read the document. Then, sign up for a walk-through, which is conducted on Tuesdays at 2 p.m., by contacting Joe Beaufait at x7131 or beaufait@jlab.org.
