12 GeV Upgrade
The contract to manufacture the downstream support structure for the CLAS12 Central Time of Flight (CTOF) detector, as well as the installation arm and transport strong-back needed to install CTOF slats into the Solenoid magnet bore, has been placed with a local machine shop. These are the last outstanding items needed to wrap up the CLAS12 detector fabrication. The other item needed for the CTOF, the light fiber bundle to distribute monitoring laser light to the CTOF slats, arrived in June and has been checked out. The remaining fast electronic modules, the crate trigger processors, needed to complete the data acquisition system and triggering systems for Hall B have begun to arrive and are being checked as they come in. Finally, bids are being solicited for the tungsten-based Moeller-electron shield, which is needed to shield the downstream detectors in CLAS12 from that source of background hits. On the installation front, the cable race for the drift chamber cables is being installed, and the parts are being collected for the manifolds needed to circulate gas to the 18 sectors of drift chamber. The initial loading of cable into the race starts later this month, followed soon after by installation of the first sectors of drift chambers themselves.

Fire Safety At Jefferson Lab
As a general rule, most of us tend to take fire safety for granted. But here at Jefferson Lab, the fire safety program is second to none among DOE's labs. From campus buildings to the accelerator and halls, the most visible signs of the program are the actual fire systems installed in virtually all buildings. Other program elements that aren't so visible are the strict enforcement of hot work permits, combustible loading inspections, fire hazards analysis, fire program self assessments, fire protection systems engineering and recapitalization, participation in experimental reviews, testing and maintenance of fire systems, close liaison with the Newport News Fire Department and our DOE field element, and other technical and programmatic activities.
The Fire Protection & Access Control group, located within the Planning and Engineering section of Facilities Management & Logistics, consists of a Fire Protection Manager, a Fire Protection Engineer and a Fire & Access Controls Technician. The Fire Protection Manager is designated by DOE as the "system owner" for the entire fire protection program and holds a seat on the DOE Fire Safety Committee. The program is promulgated by DOE Order 420.1c and further guided by DOE Standard 1066-2012, with implementation through the ESH&Q Manual. Supporting the group are two fire system Testing & Inspection Technicians within the Facilities Operations & Maintenance section.
The group’s mission is threefold:
- Provide a fire safe work environment for the lab's staff and constituents.
- Support the core mission of the lab through non-impairment of experiments due to fire.
- Protect the property of the United States Government.

Jefferson Lab Public Address System Test Set for Today at 5:30 p.m.
Emergency Management Team staff will conduct the monthly test of Jefferson Lab’s Public Address System – the live audible announcement feature – available through the lab’s Cisco phones. The test is conducted after normal business hours, because it interrupts any in-progress call on a Cisco phone. Active calls are automatically put on “hold.” As soon as the announcement has ended, the Jefferson Lab person may re-activate the call. For more information, see the full memo.
July 21 Symposium in CEBAF Center to Honor Claus Rode
On Thursday, July 21, Jefferson Lab will hold a symposium titled: Project Highlights from 50 Years in the DOE Office of Science: A scientific symposium in honor of Claus Rode. The symposium will take place 3-5:30 p.m. in the CEBAF Center auditorium and be followed by a reception in the lobby. The deadline to R.S.V.P. to Pat Stroop was July 14. See more information here.
Inspector General’s Office to Give Fraud Awareness Briefing July 27
A representative from the Department of Energy Inspector General’s Office will be at Jefferson Lab on Wednesday, July 27, to raise awareness about criminal fraud. The presentation will highlight current trends in procurement fraud, and the types of complaints being reported to the DOE IG Hotline. The briefing will take place 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. in ARC Bldg. conference room 231/233. Seating is somewhat limited, so this presentation is first-come, first-served. Travel Services Transition to Omega World Travel to Begin on July 29
The transition from CI Azumano to Omega World Travel has been scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 29, and continue through 10 a.m. on Monday, August 1. The Concur reservation system will not be available during this transition period. In the event of an emergency during the transition period, contact CI Azumano for assistance using the phone numbers listed on your itinerary. To smooth the transition, lab travelers and travel coordinators can plan to meet Omega representatives at one of the informational meetings, scheduled for 3 p.m. on Aug. 1 and 2 p.m. on Aug. 2 in the CEBAF Center auditorium. Jefferson Lab Employee Tour Set for Thursday, Aug. 11
Have you ever wanted to see the experimental halls and the accelerator tunnel, but have not had the opportunity to do so? Jefferson Lab employees, users, students and contractors will have that opportunity on Thursday, Aug. 11, 1-3:30 p.m. The tour will include stops at the Test Lab, the Machine Control Center, the CEBAF Accelerator tunnel, and Experimental Halls C and D. The visit to each facility will be guided by subject-matter experts. Photos may be taken. Space is limited and your supervisor's approval and advance registration is required. Department of Energy Sponsors Food Drive
The Department of Energy is again participating in the "Feds Feed Families" food drive this year. The Thomas Jefferson Site Office (TJSO) will be collecting donations from its federal employees – to benefit the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula. There is no expectation of Jefferson Lab employee participation in this program, although anyone wishing to contribute may do so.
