12 GeV Upgrade

Hall B is expecting to begin the cool-down of the Torus magnet later this week following closeout of recommendations from the related Experimental Readiness Review (ERR). In anticipation of energizing the magnet following cool-down, the Physics Division convened a power-up ERR last week, and the team is working to address those recommendations. For Hall C, the inspector in France has certified that Quadrupole 2 (Q2) magnet for the Super High Momentum Spectrometer has passed the required leak and pressure tests, and it is certified to meet the ASME pressure vessel safety code requirements. Q2 is expected to be shipped by the vendor in France in mid-August with arrival in Hall C in mid-September.

DOE Posts Lab Publications
Did you know that Jefferson Lab must submit the final, peer reviewed, accepted manuscripts to the Department of Energy? They will be embargoed both in the laboratory’s publications system and in DOE's Pages for one year before being released to the public. Visit DOE Pages and read "Guidance for DOE-Funded Authors" for more details about the DOE Public Access Plan and how it affects Jefferson Lab authors. Plan to attend the next Publications Training and Refresher course on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 10:30 a.m. in CEBAF Center room F224-225. If you plan to attend, R.S.V.P. to Kim Edwards at kindrew@jlab.org by Aug. 9.

Pick Up a Free Book or Magazine!
Information Resources has added new library books to the free book cart. Remaining books will be disposed on Sept. 1. See the list here. The library is also offering a selection of older (2005-2015) copies of scientific journals and science-related periodicals on a first-come, first-served basis through the end of August. If interested, stop by, take a look, and feel free to take what you want. A list of the available titles is published online.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A new paper presents for the first time a determination of the energy dependence of the isoscalar π π elastic scattering phase-shift within a first-principles numerical lattice approach to QCD. Hadronic correlation functions are computed, including all required quark propagation diagrams. From these, the discrete spectrum of states in the finite volume is obtained, constraining the S-wave phase-shift up to the K-K threshold. Calculations are performed at two values of the u, d quark mass corresponding to mπ = 236, 391 MeV, and the resulting amplitudes are described in terms of a σ meson, which evolves from a bound state below π π threshold at the heavier quark mass to a broad resonance at the lighter quark mass.

Facilities Management & Logistics

Time-Limited Parking Spaces Now Available
Several one-hour parking spaces have been created in two locations on-site. There are two parking spaces adjacent to the Technology and Engineering Development Building (Bldg. 55) high bay section and two in the northeast parking lot of the Test Lab (Bldg. 58). When using these spaces, be sure to limit your stay to one hour. As is the case for all time-limited and special-purpose spaces, proper usage of these marked spaces will be strictly enforced in accordance with the Traffic & Parking Management Policy posted in the Jefferson Lab Administrative Manual. Click this link for a map highlighting the one-hour spaces. If you have any questions about the marked spaces, contact Bob Sperlazza, x6241.

Environment, Health, Safety and Quality

Safe Digging at Home and at Jefferson Lab
Summer is a popular time for homeowners to get caught up with outside projects, including those that involve outdoor digging or excavation. As we all know, there is a good chance that you have buried utilities in your yard, including electrical, natural gas, cable television, etc. So before you begin any outdoor digging/excavation project at home, contact Miss Utility of Virginia at least three working days before you plan to dig at 811 (or 1-800-552-7001) or visit at www.va811.com. It’s a free service and it is for your safety.

Jefferson Lab has a similar process for digging/excavation and blind penetration operations. Refer to Facilities Management & Logistics and look under ‘Fillable Forms’ for more information on these two activities.

Announcements

Annual Property Inventory Continues
Reminder: When asked, Property Custodians are required to show Property Management personnel the items that they have assigned, at the correct location, and be able to show the tag # and serial #. If a tagged item is going to be put in a different location on-site for more than 30 days, a Movement Request must be submitted to the Property Management section, so that the property database is updated. You may submit a Movement Request via the property search tool. Property Custodians are also required to notify Property Management if they plan to take any tagged item off-site. The Property Custodian must apply for a Property Pass or Temporary Property Movement for the item, and the custodian will be authorized to take the item off-site for use once the request has been approved. If you have any questions about these requirements or need assistance with assigned property, contact Christian Whalen, x5899.

Travel Services Transition to Omega World Travel to Begin on July 29
The transition from CI Azumano to Omega World Travel has been scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 29, and continue through 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 1. The Concur reservation system will not be available during this transition period. In the event of an emergency during the transition period, contact CI Azumano for assistance using the phone numbers listed on your itinerary. For more information, see the all-staff memo.

Department of Energy Sponsors Food Drive
The Department of Energy is again participating in the "Feds Feed Families" food drive this year. The Thomas Jefferson Site Office (TJSO) will be collecting donations from its federal employees to benefit the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula. There is no expectation of Jefferson Lab employee participation in this program, although anyone wishing to contribute may do so. Marked donation boxes for non-perishable food items will be located in the CEBAF Center lobby Aug. 1-19. For more information, see the memo.

Reminder: JSA Initiatives Fund Program Proposals Due Aug. 8
JSA is soliciting proposals for Initiatives Fund support for the FY17 program. Members of the Jefferson Lab user community, Jefferson Lab researchers and staff, other individuals or groups who can make unique contributions to the lab's research, development, education and technology transfer missions. The Initiatives Fund is provided by the JSA owners, SURA and PAE Applied Technologies. Proposals are due Aug. 8. For full application information and details, see the full announcement.
