Pick Up a Free Book or Magazine!
Information Resources has added new library books to the free book cart. Remaining books will be disposed on Sept. 1. See the list here. The library is also offering a selection of older (2005-2015) copies of scientific journals and science-related periodicals on a first-come, first-served basis through the end of August. If interested, stop by, take a look, and feel free to take what you want. A list of the available titles is published online.

Engineering

The Installation and Vacuum groups have been busy in the Low Energy Recirculator Facility removing, re-configuring and reinstalling components in the 3F and 4F regions in support of the DarkLight experiment. Additionally, the group has been active supporting the CEBAF accelerator:

• worked on installation/repair of the YR6T02 dipole;
• removed 1L12 and 1L13 warm girders to allow cryomodule C50-12 to be installed;
• relocated 5C line fast feedback correctors to the BE line;
• repaired low-conductivity system leaks and coils (MJ3A05,MJC5A05,MJD1A05,MJA7A30, and MQB1A03) in the east arc;
• fabricated and welded a guard vacuum skid for the Central Helium Liquefier;
• connected vacuum and leak checked YR6T02 septum dipole;
• reconfigured and leak checked the 123 MeV beamline;
• currently relocating and replacing air solenoids on C100's to mitigate radiation damage; and
• worked on fabrication, assembly, installation and leak checks of beampipe for the 750 Mhz RF separators.

Machine Tool Safety
At Jefferson Lab, an operational safety procedure (OSP) is developed for machine tools having rotational motion, hydraulic or leveraged force that are non-portable or secured for stability. These machines have moving parts with the potential to cause severe injuries, up to and including crushed fingers or hands, amputations, burns or blindness. Safeguards are essential for protecting workers while using these types of machines. Any machine part, function or process that could cause injury must be safeguarded. When the operation of a machine has the potential to injure the operator or others in the vicinity, the hazards must be eliminated or controlled.

More information about hazards related to machine guarding can be found in ES&H Manual 6121 Appendix T1 Safe Operation of Machine Tools. This appendix provides the safety rules applicable to operating machine tools at Jefferson Lab. It is based on Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations and American National Standards Institute standards. Operator’s Manuals also provide valuable information and are used in preparation of OSPs and training. Only personnel who have completed the required training can be authorized by the Machine Shop Manager to operate machine tools.

Safety information on portable hand tools, which include manually powered tools, portable power tools and powder-actuated fastening tools, is available in ES&H Manual Chapter 6120 Appendix T1 Portable Hand Tool Safe Practices.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

New Web Traffic Protections Launch on Tuesday, Aug. 23
Jefferson Lab uses several automated protection systems to scan web traffic for malware and viruses. The protection provided by these scans has become increasingly limited by the expanding use of encryption for web traffic on the Internet. To provide continued security for Jefferson Lab systems, starting on Tuesday, Aug. 23, Jefferson Lab will begin decrypting some web traffic for desktop systems connected via the Desktop 1 and Business Services networks. This will allow the automated processes that the lab has in place to scan this traffic and remove identified viruses and malware. Traffic from known medical and financial institutions, however, will be exempted from being decrypted, as these are generally not sites from which malware and viruses are deployed. If you have any questions or concerns about this process, the CNI group is holding two, one-hour informational meetings in CEBAF Center room F113 at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, and Friday, Aug. 19. To determine if your desktop is linked via the Desktop 1 network, visit https://cc.jlab.org/WhatsMyIP from a web browser on your desktop system. Volunteer Opportunity: United Way Day of Caring
The 2016 United Way Day of Caring for the Peninsula will be on Friday, Sept. 9, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Jefferson Lab is offering employees the opportunity to volunteer a day of their time to work on a project for one of the participating, local health and human services organizations in Hampton Roads. Typical volunteer positions consist of community enhancement projects that encompass a myriad of activities, such as painting, landscaping and food bank assistance. If you are interested in volunteering your time on Sept. 9 or have questions about the event, email Krystina Serafini at serafini@jlab.org. To volunteer, copy your immediate supervisor on the email, who must concur with your participation, no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26.

Reminder: Hall C Safety Awareness Training Updated
Due to the new configuration of Hall C, the Safety Awareness Training for the hall, SAF112, has been updated. This training will expire on Sept. 1 for anyone who last completed this training before May 1, 2016. To take the updated training, first read the document. Then, sign up for a walk-through, which is conducted on Tuesdays at 2 p.m., by contacting Joe Beaufait at x7131 or beaufait@jlab.org.

Reminder: Options to Save Time, Money in Procuring Materials for Your Next Project
Jefferson Lab offers several opportunities for department and groups to save money in their budgets by using alternate resources to procure items. The next time you need materials for a Jefferson Lab project, check to see if they may be found on one of these locations:

• The Excess Catalog offers items that have been returned to Property for re-use;
• The CMSA metal recycling area provides pipes and other metal pieces available for re-use: To use, fill out a pink sheet or contact Don Brown at x6297 or dbrown@jlab.org; and
• The GSAXcess website has items that the lab can get for the cost of shipping. You may log in with username GOVUSE and password GOVUSE. If you find an item here, send an email to property@jlab.org with the "Item Control Number."

Lastly, remember that when you plan to move property from one building to another for more than 30 days, you must notify Property Management, so that the item’s location is kept updated; this prevents the reporting of items that have been moved as missing.
