Publications Refresher Course Set for Sept. 23
Mark your calendars and R.S.V.P. to attend the next Publications Refresher Course to receive a demonstration of the Jefferson Lab Publications System and have all your questions about public access answered. The next course is Friday, Sept. 23, at 9 a.m. in CEBAF Center room F224-225. R.S.V.P. to kindrew@jlab.org by close of business on Thursday, Sept. 22.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

Future Jefferson Lab experiments, in particular those with the Solenoidal Large Intensity Device (SoLID), aim at very precise data in the region where the partonic structure of the nucleon is dominated by the valence quarks, for example, to constrain the quark transversity distributions. A new analysis applies recent theoretical advances in the global QCD extraction of the transversity distributions to study the impact of future experimental data from the SoLID experiments. A simple strategy is developed, based on the Hessian matrix analysis, that allows one to estimate the uncertainties of the transversity quark distributions and their tensor charges from SoLID data simulation.

Engineering

The Machine Shop is presently manufacturing or continuing to manufacture the following:

  • Twenty 50 Ohm stripline beam position monitors are in the process of being welded;
  • Two 50 Ohm stripline BPM’s zero length, are in the process of being welded;
  • A positron 100 KeV Faraday cup assembly is in final assembly and welding for the injector;
  • A positron 5 KeV Faraday cup assembly is also in final assembly and welding for the injector;
  • The A1n target system ladder modification for Hall C;
  • The Niowave CERN cavity is in rework for final e-beam assembly welding for SRF; and
  • The LCLS-II rail cavity support and tooling for SRF.

In addition, various small machining jobs are in progress for lab customers.

Reporting Electric Shock
In accordance with ES&H Manual Chapter 6200 Appendix T3 General Electrical Safety Guidelines, “Everyone at Jefferson Lab is responsible for reporting cases of electric shock, no matter how minor, to Occupational Medicine at x7539.”

Electric shock occurs when a sufficient electric current comes into contact with a (human) body. Very small currents can be imperceptible; however, larger currents may make it impossible for the victim to let go of the energized object. The minimum current a human can feel depends on the current type (AC or DC) as well as frequency for AC. A person can feel at least 1 mA (rms) of AC at 60 Hz, and at least 5 mA for DC. It is important to remember that some equipment has the potential for shock even after turning it off and disconnecting the power cord.

The reason Jefferson Lab asks you to report incidences of electric shock that you experience while working on or using equipment, is because no matter how minor, a direct exposure to electricity can result in a variety of consequences to a body. For example, electric currents can travel through the nervous system and burn out tissue in patches along the way, often making it difficult to immediately identify an injury.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

IT Division Maintenance Period Set for Tuesday, Sept. 20
The IT Division is planning to conduct system maintenance activities on Tuesday evening, Sept 20, 5-7 p.m. During this time, staff members will reboot the public linux systems, jlabl1-5, in order to update the hardware configurations. Also, patches will be released to all CUE-managed Linux and Windows systems. There will also be various reboots of systems and services overnight in order to finalize the patch installations on central servers. Updated Core CUE software will also be released, such as Firefox, during the maintenance period. Plan to update these packages when prompted and reboot your system to finalize patch installations no later than Friday, Sept. 23. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk@jlab.org or x7155.

Announcements

Annual Property Inventory Ends on Sept. 26
The Jefferson Lab Annual Property Inventory will end on Monday, Sept. 26. The inventory has been underway since early June. Before Sept. 26, those Property Custodians who have been contacted by Property Management personnel regarding items not found during the inventory are asked to seek out those items and submit a digital image of each item, including the visible property tag, and send the image(s) to Property Management. Property inventory questions and photos of found items may be sent to property@jlab.org. Specific questions about these requirements may be directed to Christian Whalen, x5899. See the full announcement for links to forms for moving items and reporting missing items.

Jefferson Lab Golf Outing Set for Sept. 30
The Jefferson Lab 2016 Fall Golf Outing will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (Green Course) in Williamsburg, Va. The tourney will kick off at noon with a shotgun start. The format will be a handicapped Captain’s Choice with two flights. The registration fee for Jefferson Lab employees (you qualify if you receive a paycheck from JSA) is $65. The registration fee for non-employees is $80. The deadline for registering for the tournament is Monday, Sept. 26. For tournament details, participation requirements and signup information, see the We Hear That page.

Role Model and Activity Volunteers Needed to Help with BEAMS
Becoming Enthusiastic About Math and Science – or BEAMS – Jefferson Lab's long-running math and science enrichment program for upper-elementary and middle-school students needs help. BEAMS supports Newport News inner-city public school students as they progress from fifth through eighth grade. Over the course of the school year, nearly 1,500 students and their teachers visit Jefferson Lab between two and three days to participate in BEAMS science and math activities conducted with the help of lab scientists, engineers, technicians and administrators. Lab staff members, users and students interested in assisting with educational activities conducted at the lab during normal business hours are encouraged to contact Christine Wheeler at x7560 or wheelerc@jlab.org. See more detailed program and activity information in the all-staff memo.

Dog Brain Games & Tricks Class Offered
Want to train your dog to do a new trick or two? This course is designed to teach you how to clicker train your dog to perform some cute tricks. Classes will meet on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in Bldg. 28, the Support Services Building lobby. First class is on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016.
