12 GeV Upgrade

One of the superconducting magnets built in France for the Hall C Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS) is now crossing the North Atlantic by ship and is expected to arrive in Norfolk by the end of September. This "Q2" magnet will be delivered to Jefferson Lab, outfitted with survey marks, and placed on the SHMS carriage for connection to the cryogenic, power and controls systems.

The leak that was discovered in the dipole magnet helium system in July has now been repaired. The dipole was cut open to access the faulty component, and it has since been welded closed. The magnet is being crated for shipment to the U.S. now.

The last magnet, Q3, is in the final assembly phase. More work has taken place in Hall C and the Experimental Staging Building to verify the performance of the new detectors.  One of the SHMS drift chambers is already mounted on the frame which will support it in the SHMS.

Positron Working Group Forms at Jefferson Lab
A newly created Positron Working Group (PWG) has been established to explore the physics possibilities of a positron experimental program at Jefferson Lab. The inaugural goal of the PWG is to investigate the capabilities, requirements and physics reach with respect to positron research topics and then deliver a Jefferson Lab Positron Physics White Paper in 2017. Personal Protective Equipment Can Minimize Exposure to Hazards
Jefferson Lab's ES&H Manual Chapter 6620 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Program provides guidance to minimize employee exposure to hazards, such as cutting, grinding, drilling, sharp edges, pinch and temperature extremes. PPE is often used as a supplement to, not as a substitute for, engineering controls. This program provides general information concerning the most common PPE provided to employees at Jefferson Lab.  In accordance with ES&H Manual Chapter 3210 Work Planning, Control, and Authorization Procedure, Jefferson Lab considers basic, non-specialized PPE to be "Standard Protecting Measures."
Basic, non-specialized PPE at Jefferson Lab includes: 

• Hard hat,
• Safety glass with side shields,
• Safety Shoes,
• Hearing protection,
• Face shield,
• Gloves,
• Knee pads, and
• Proper work clothes.

Basic, non-specialized PPE does not protect against exposure to all hazards, (e.g. electricity, welding, etc.). These hazards require specialized PPE, and often, training in its use. See the ES&H Manual chapter applicable to specific hazard tasks for specialized PPE requirements.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Web Traffic Protections Expansion Set for Tuesday, Oct. 4
To provide improved security for Jefferson Lab systems, the IT Division will start decrypting web traffic for those systems on the Common User Environment Desktop 3 and any remaining networks on Tuesday, Oct 4. This will allow the automated processes that the lab has in place to scan this traffic and remove identified viruses and malware. To determine what network your desktop is linked via, visit https://cc.jlab.org/WhatsMyIP from a web browser on your desktop system. As noted in a previous brief, traffic from known medical and financial institutions will be exempted from decryption, as these are generally not sites from where malware and viruses are deployed. Bike Rack on North Side of CEBAF Center F Wing Will Be Removed on Sept. 30
The bike rack located along the north side of the CEBAF Center F Wing (adjacent to the K Stairwell) will be removed on Friday, Sept. 30. The rack is currently located where the new mechanical systems are to be placed as part of the computer room upgrade project. With the removal of this rack, CEBAF Center still has accommodations for bikes at the A and C wing entrances. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Bob Sperlazza, x6241.

Additional TIAA-CREF Individual Counseling Sessions Offered Fall 2016
TIAA-CREF has added two more Individual Counseling Sessions, where you can discuss your personal financial situation with a TIAA-CREF financial consultant on a confidential basis, to be offered at Jefferson Lab on Nov. 22 and Dec. 13 in room 22i in the Support Service Center, Bldg. 28. JAG Iron Brew Competition
Jefferson Lab Homebrewers are invited to enter the Iron Brew Competition to take place at the upcoming Jefferson Lab Oktoberfest on Oct. 27. The beers will be judged by a popular vote using a ticketing system. Brewers may bring as many beers for which they have sufficient quantities. JAG recommends that homebrewers who wish to enter the competition should be prepared to bring at least 72 ounces in their preferred format; entries are not limited to any style or ingredient. Bring your best crowd pleaser and some way to keep it cold; tasting cups will be provided for the crowd’s sampling. Vacation Donation Program Enrollment a Success
Thanks to the selfless generosity of Jefferson Lab staff members, Human Resources has collected 484 hours of donated time for the Vacation Donation Program! The program is designed to provide financial assistance to employees during approved unpaid leaves related to a medical illness for themselves or an eligible family member. Since the inception of this program in 2011, the program has provided approximately 800 total hours of donated time to very grateful employees. Performance Appraisal Process Is Underway
Jefferson Lab's annual performance review cycle is Oct. 1-Sept. 30. This year's performance appraisal process began Sept. 27. All supervisors should go into the Performance Appraisal system and activate their employees' performance appraisals. For more information and links to the system, see the full memo.

Role Model and Activity Volunteers Needed to Help with BEAMS
Becoming Enthusiastic About Math and Science – or BEAMS – Jefferson Lab's long-running math and science enrichment program for upper-elementary and middle-school students needs help. Dog Brain Games & Tricks Class Offered
Want to train your dog to do a new trick or two? This course is designed to teach you how to clicker train your dog to perform some cute tricks. Classes will meet on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in Bldg. 28, the Support Services Building lobby. First class is on Tuesday, Oct. 4. To participate, your dog should have a solid “down” and “sit” cue; and be house trained. See full course information on the We Hear That page.
