12 GeV Upgrade

After a brief delay in Halifax, the ship bearing the French-built Q2 magnet for the Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS) finally arrived in Norfolk last week. Representatives of Jefferson Lab and the vendor SigmaPhi greeted the magnet at the sea terminal in Norfolk, where it was uncrated and loaded on a lowboy truck for transport to Jefferson Lab. Q2 arrived on the floor of Hall C on Thursday. After passing an incoming inspection, it was promptly surveyed and mounted on the SHMS carriage. Work is now proceeding to connect the magnet to its services and to prepare for its consideration by the Physics Division Experiment Readiness Review committee. The coming weeks will be very busy as Q2 is instrumented and prepared for operation. The second French magnet, the large Dipole, is in Belgium awaiting a ship that will carry it to the U.S. The final new Hall C magnet, Q3, is undergoing final assembly in France and is expected to begin its journey early next month.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A new analysis of the strange-antistrange parton distribution function (PDF) asymmetry in the proton has been performed in the framework of chiral effective theory, including the full set of lowest order diagrams with off-shell and contact interactions, in addition to the usual on-shell contributions. The analysis identifies δ-function contributions to the s PDF at zero parton momentum fraction, x=0, with a corresponding valence-like component of the s-quark PDF at larger x. These findings allow greater flexibility for the shape of the s-s difference and will impact the extraction of strange quark PDFs in global QCD analysis.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Cold Weather and Critters
With the recent annual shift in temperatures to the cooler side and colder temperatures to come, many small animals and insects will start seeking shelter and warmth. Some of these creatures will find a home in warm Jefferson Lab buildings. As the weather continues to change, be especially vigilant for such critters as spiders, snakes, rodents, deer and others.

If you encounter what may be a poisonous insect or other animal in a difficult location, the proper response is to leave the insect or animal alone and, if needed, contact Facilities Management and Logistics at x7400 for removal. Never try to kill or physically handle such critters. Jefferson Lab has properly trained contractors who, following the laws and regulations for animal removal, can properly handle the situation promptly.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Maintenance Period Scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 18
The IT Division is planning a maintenance period for 5-10 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18. During this time, there may be short network interruptions while network devices are reconfigured. Additionally, there may be short outages of the MIS file server (P: drive) while the OS is updated. Also, the central file server will be upgraded, and this may cause a couple of short outages of the J, K, L and M drives. The Zimbra mail servers will suffer a short outage while they are rebooted to finalize patches and install updated certificates. Also, all of the MIS apps will be down while underlying systems are patched and rebooted. All services will be back up no later than 10 p.m. Finally, Windows and Linux patches will be released to CUE-managed desktops and servers. There may be short outages overnight while these servers are rebooted to finalize patch installation. Also, plan on rebooting your Windows or Linux desktop no later than Friday, Oct. 21, to finalize patch installation. Colloquium: Gravitational Waves and Black Holes
If you’ve heard about the recent detection of gravitational waves and wonder what the kerfuffle is about, come hear Vernon Sandberg, Caltech, explain how our understanding of dynamical gravity changed from theoretical to experimentally confirmed in the early hours of Sept. 14, 2015. Sandberg is a Lead Scientist at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) Hanford Observatory in Washington. In this colloquium, he will discuss the LIGO project, the physics behind its interferometers, and the first direct detection of gravitational-wave events. The talk is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Oct. 28 in the CEBAF Center auditorium.

Veterans Day Collage Needs Your Submissions
In recognition of Veterans Day, veterans of military service are invited to participate in a collage to be displayed in CEBAF Center on Veterans Day. Save the Date: Say Cheese for the First All-Staff Photo in Two Decades!

Flatbed Trailer for Use by LCLS-II Only
A flatbed trailer has been parked in the lay-down area on the Accelerator Site. The black curtain-side on the trailer has "Miller Transfer" printed in white letters, and a yellow Kingpin lock is installed on the fifth-wheel coupler. The trailer is strictly for use by the LCLS-II project for transporting Cryomodules off-site; no other usage is authorized. If the trailer is impeding other work and needs to be moved, contact John Fischer at x7408. For other inquiries regarding the trailer, contact Naeem Huque at x7485.

Come Out and Enjoy JAG Oktoberfest!
