12 GeV Upgrade

The tooling to install the Central Time of Flight for CLAS12 has been delivered. These are the final items of tooling and installation fixtures for the Central Time of Flight, or for any CLAS12 detector on the 12 GeV Project, for that matter; the order includes the installation arm and transport strong-back needed to install CTOF slats into the Solenoid magnet bore. A contract was awarded for the tungsten-based Moeller-electron shield, which is needed to shield the downstream detectors in CLAS12 from that source of background hits. On the installation front, the six Region 2 Drift Chamber sectors have been installed into the Torus magnet, a few weeks after the six Region 1 Drift Chamber sectors were installed into the Torus magnet. Work is proceeding to wire up the low-voltage and high-voltage supplies for these and to prepare the manifolds for the chamber gas. The Region 3 Drift Chambers will be installed once the Torus magnet is tested at high current and then field-mapped.

Library Offers Free Books
The library is purging its older titles and offering them to lab staff on a first-come, first-served basis. These books are located near the windows in the back of the library area - just look for the signs. The library will dispose of any unclaimed books on Nov. 1. The list of available books is linked here.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

Quantum Chromodynamics describes the strong interactions of quarks and gluons as mediated by a fundamental charge called "color." While in Nature the number of color charges is three, many interesting insights can be obtained by considering a hypothetical world with a large number of color charges, in which the dynamics simplifies and baryons behave like heavy classical bodies. Recent work has applied this method to study the Generalized Parton Distributions measured in high-momentum meson production experiments at Jefferson Lab (π0 and η) and found the predictions to be in good agreement with the CLAS 6 GeV results.

Engineering

The metrology group has been busy supporting many activities throughout the lab, including the following.

  • The skeleton network survey in the main accelerator was completed. This is necessary to track tunnel settlement/ movement, which assists Accelerator Operations with understanding beam path changes.
  • In Hall A, the revised Q1 quadruple magnets on both spectrometers were re-fiducialized and re-aligned to the spectrometers. Additional Hall A work consisted of aligning the Compton table, Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering experiment surveys, spectrometer pointing surveys and alignment of the GEp target.
  • All six of Hall B's Region 1 Drift Chambers between the cryostats of the torus were aligned, as were two of the six Region 2 Drift Chambers. Also in Hall B, the mapper plates were installed and aligned to less than 0.1 millimeter of design.
  • The big news in Hall C was the delivery of Q2 for the Super High Momentum Spectrometer. The group had to work rapidly to fiducialize the magnet prior to installation on the yoke in SHMS. The Hall C target was also aligned.
  • In Hall D, the tagger microscope, hodoscopes and collimator were fiducialized. The goniometer was also aligned.
  • For LCLS-II, the vacuum vessel, cavity string, cold mass supports and assembly floor rails were all either aligned or measured.
  • Finally, magnet measurement started the commissioning of the Hall B Torus mapper. The group verified the mechanical and software systems by sampling data on the Torus magnet at 10 percent of full power. The tests were successful.

Facilities Management and Logistics

Hogan Drive: Expansion Work to Begin Week of Oct. 24
Beginning the week of Oct. 24, the process will start to change the two-lane Hogan Drive into four lanes. The process is scheduled to take 8-9 months. The first phase will be to construct two new lanes on the Jefferson Lab side of Hogan. The existing road will remain open during this work. The next phase will transfer all traffic to the new road, in order to construct the other two new lanes and the landscaped medium. Traffic signs will be posted.

During much of this process, the Jefferson Lab Hofstadter Road entrance off Hogan will be closed. Incoming traffic to the Support Service Center, Bldg. 28, can enter either at Lawrence Drive off Hogan or down Rattley Road. Traffic exiting the lab will need to leave through the Rattley/Hogan entrance or the Lawrence/Jefferson Ave. entrance. If you have any questions about this work, contact Bob Sperlazza at x6241 or sperlazz@jlab.org.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Battery Recycling and Disposal
Recycling is the best option for disposing of used and dead batteries. In some cases, it is illegal to throw certain types of batteries into residential trash (e.g. car batteries). Some batteries, particularly the rechargeable types, are relatively easy and free to recycle. The City of Newport News offers a listing of local vendor options.

Unfortunately, it is not as easy to recycle alkaline batteries. These have little material value compared to the cost of transportation, labor and equipment necessary for recycling them. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality states that it is acceptable to dispose of alkaline batteries in the residential trash. In the past, this was a concern; however, in the U.S., these batteries now contain little or no mercury, thanks to the Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act of 1996.

Jefferson Lab has a battery recycling program that is simple and easy to use. Batteries of any type, purchased and used for laboratory operations, may be deposited in the "blue tubes," strategically located around the site (usually near a building’s mail distribution area). Some areas also have a small drum for sealed lead acid batteries. These tubes and drums are not for personal use. Please do not bring batteries from home. It is illegal for Jefferson Lab to dispose of personal use batteries. Anyone who sees a full container or other problem, or needs assistance with large rechargeable batteries (such batteries used in laptops, cordless drills, etc.), should use the contact information on the container. A lab employee will provide assistance with collection, sorting and preparing the batteries for shipment.

Announcements

Say Cheese for the First All-Staff Photo in Two Decades!
On Monday, Oct. 24, Jefferson Lab Public Affairs is planning to capture the first photo to be taken since 1996 of all staff members. All full-time, casual, jointly appointed and student employees of Jefferson Science Associates, LLC, are invited to participate. Come early for the 9:30 a.m. portrait to be taken on the brick walkway in front of the Technology and Engineering Development Building (Bldg. 55).
