In a new paper, lattice QCD is used to compute the tritium axial coupling, as well as the axial nuclear matrix element relevant to proton-proton fusion. The calculations are performed using flavor SU(3) symmetric quarks at the physical strange quark mass. At this quark mass, the Gamow-Teller matrix element in tritium is found to be 0.979(03)(10), and the leading two-nucleon axial counterterm of pionless effective field theory is determined to be L1,A=3.9(0.1)(1.0)(0.3)(0.9) fm3 at a renormalization scale set by the physical pion mass.

Engineering

Since the end of September, the Electrical Engineering group has transitioned from summer maintenance work to fall CEBAF operations in support of Hall A and Hall D physics. The group has also been involved with the Hall B magnet testing, in particular, instrumentation and control support and superconducting power supply testing.

All electrical groups, the RF, the DC, the I&C, and the Safety and the Support group, have successfully completed machine "hot checkout" and system handover to Operations during this time.

Heed Work Safety Signs, Cones and Stanchions in the Test Lab High Bay
To meet the needs of work underway in the Test Lab High Bay, the area has become very dynamic and congested. The walking paths and boundaries of radiologically controlled areas (RCAs)/radioactive material areas (RMA) may shift or change dramatically from day-to-day or even from morning-to-afternoon. Crane operations (to move equipment across the High Bay area) and alignment work (using lasers) have become regular activities. For everyone’s safety, this means all staff, Users and visitors must be observant and heed all signage and postings. In particular:

  • Watch for footpaths closed for crane operations and detour when necessary;
  • Watch for “Lasers in Use” warnings around Alignment work; and
  • Make sure to stay out of the permanent and temporary RCAs in the Test Lab unless you need to be in them, have current RadWorker I training, and are wearing your personal dosimeter.

Read the full memo for more information about the work and how it can affect access.

JLab Travelers: New Entry Requirements for Canada Now in Effect
Foreign Nationals previously exempt from visa requirements to enter Canada are now required to apply for an online Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to or transit through Canada. Exceptions who are not required to apply for an eTA include U.S. citizens, travelers with a valid Canadian visa, Canadian citizens (including dual citizens), and Canadian permanent residents. Lists of countries whose citizens are now required to apply for an ETA can be found online. The leniency period that allows travelers to board their flight without an eTA for Canada ends Nov. 9, 2016. See more information on the Foreign Travel page of the Travel Services website.

Come Out and Enjoy JAG Oktoberfest!
Jefferson Lab employees and users are invited to the Jefferson Lab Activities Group (JAG) Oktoberfest scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 27, 3-6 p.m. in the field behind the SURA Residence Facility. A variety of foods will be available, as well as games and activities, including a Bounce House and Pumpkin Toss. The United Way winning raffle tickets will be drawn at 4:30 p.m. For more information, see the JAG website.

Colloquium: Gravitational Waves and Black Holes
If you’ve heard about the recent detection of gravitational waves and wonder what the kerfuffle is about, come hear Vernon Sandberg, Caltech, explain how our understanding of dynamical gravity changed from theoretical to experimentally confirmed in the early hours of Sept. 14, 2015. Sandberg is a Lead Scientist at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) Hanford Observatory in Washington. In this colloquium, he will discuss the LIGO project, the physics behind its interferometers, and the first direct detection of gravitational-wave events. The talk is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Oct. 28 in the CEBAF Center auditorium.

Veterans Day Collage Needs Your Submissions
In recognition of Veterans Day, veterans of military service are invited to participate in a collage to be displayed in CEBAF Center on Veterans Day. This will be similar to the one displayed the past two years. If you submitted a photo in the past, no need to re-submit. For more information or to participate, contact Mike Robbins at mrobbins@jlab.org or x7616. Submissions should be made by Oct. 31 and include a photo of yourself in uniform and your full name, branch of service and years of service. If you do not have a digital copy of your photo, employees can bring a picture to CEBAF Center room C222 to be scanned.

United Way Pledge Campaign Continues Through Nov. 7
Jefferson Lab's annual pledge campaign for the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula is underway. Every contribution to the United Way, no matter the sum, provides an array of critical services and supplies to those in need within our community. After-school programs, affordable daycare, transportation for the elderly, hospice care, job training for the less fortunate and even food and shelter are just some of the benefits that result from your donations. Download the pledge form or pick up a physical form at the front desks of the SSC, TED, MCC and CEBAF Center. All forms should be returned to Krystina Serafini, Mail Stop 12B, CEBAF Center Room B214 by Monday, Nov. 7.

JLab Weekly Briefs is an ongoing publication providing information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, free-electron laser, reviews, upcoming activities and special events. Deadline for submission is every Tuesday by 10 a.m. Submit new items to: Public Affairs or contact Kandice Carter at x7263.
