12 GeV Upgrade

At the request of DOE's Office of Nuclear Physics, Stephen Meador, Director of the Office of Project Assessment in DOE's Office of Science, convened a team of 10 experts and eight observers for a Status Review of the 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade Project at Jefferson Lab, held Oct. 25-26. The purpose of the review was to assess all ongoing aspects of the project, including technical, cost, schedule, management, and environment, safety and health. The review team provided valuable feedback in all areas, with a total of six recommendations in the closeout report. The committee enthusiastically congratulated all team members working in support of the 12 GeV Upgrade on the significant amount of work completed since a similar review last October and was supportive of the team’s planned approach to completing the project on schedule and cost.

Physics

Hall A

Hall A has completed a planned, dedicated run for the GMp (proton magnetic form factor) experiment. Electromagnetic form factors describe the distributions of electric charge and current inside the nucleon and thus are intimately related to its internal structure. Hall A has now reconfigured to continue running with DVCS (Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering) as the primary experiment through to the winter break. DVCS will provide unique access to the three-dimensional structure of the proton through the generalized parton distribution framework.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A new Theory Center paper presents an exact solution to the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation for massive fermion propagators in momentum space in Quantum Electrodynamics by introducing a spectral representation. With this solution, the conditions required to ensure the gauge covariance of propagators have been deduced as constraints on the truncation of the Schwinger-Dyson equations. Such covariance requirements are essential to claims that the correct electromagnetic form factors of the pion and proton have been deduced from bound state calculations inputing such propagators.

Engineering

The Central Machine Shop is currently manufacturing the following equipment:

• Manufactured 10 support frames (University of Virginia design) for Hall A's GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) detector;
• Completed work on CERN’s radiofrequency dipole niobium main body and end caps - these parts are now ready for electron beam welding;
• Fabricating the cavity tooling for the upstream double quarter wave cavity for the Large Hadron Accelerator Research Program (LARP) for SRF;
• Finishing the yoke parts for Hall C's Super High Momentum Spectrometer bend magnet;
• Modifying Moeller shield parts for Hall B; and
• Finishing the last components for the 3He platform for Hall C.

Change Your Clock and Install New Batteries in Home Safety Devices
According to a report from the National Fire Protection Association, in 2009-2013, three out of every five home fire deaths occurred from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms, and the death rate from reported fires was more than twice as high in homes with no or no working smoke alarms as it was in fires with working smoke alarms.

The end of Daylight Saving Time, which is set for Sunday, Nov. 6, is a good time to put new batteries in home carbon monoxide detectors, smoke alarms and other battery-driven safety devices, and it's a good time to test that these devices are in good working order.

Quark Cafe Offers Thanksgiving Feast on Wed., Nov. 9
Quark Cafe staff will host a Thanksgiving Warm-up Buffet on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The buffet menu will include roast turkey with cornbread sage dressing, country-style gravy, fresh orange cranberry sauce, butternut squash ravioli, carved prime rib of beef, Yukon Gold garlic mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green beans almandine, garden peas with mushrooms, dinner rolls and assorted pies. The buffet is $12.00 plus tax and includes one plate, a medium fountain drink and a dessert.

Place Orders by Nov. 18 at Quark Cafe for Thanksgiving Desserts
The Quark Cafe is taking Thanksgiving dessert orders now through Nov. 18. Selections include pumpkin, southern pecan, sweet potato and French silk pies and pumpkin cheesecake. The deadline for orders is 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18. Order forms are available in the cafeteria and include the prices, pick up date/time options and handling instructions. Orders must be picked up and paid for on Nov. 22, 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., or  on Nov. 23, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Jefferson Lab Offering Financial Planning Workshop
TIAA-CREF will host a Financial Planning Lunch and Learn Workshop geared toward women who are interested in learning more about planning and controlling their long-term financial well-being. The entire Jefferson Lab population is welcome to attend this free workshop, however the main focus of this event will be women at any point in their careers. JAG Fall Food Drive Underway
The Jefferson Lab Activities Group has positioned food drive donation drop boxes at several locations around the lab. Unopened, canned or boxed, nonperishable food items may be put into the boxes. Items packaged in glass can’t be accepted. Suggested donations include ready-to-eat meats; cereal and cereal bars; nutritional snacks such as nuts and dried fruits; canned vegetables and fruits; pasta, ravioli and sauces; hearty soups, stews and chili; and peanut butter and jellies. All donations will be collected on Friday, Nov. 18, for delivery to the Peninsula Food Bank. Food donation drop boxes are in the ARC, SSC, CEBAF Center, and TED lobbies. Tornado Warning Siren Test Set for Friday, Nov. 4
Jefferson Lab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 4. Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise. Individuals planning to be in the Central Materials Storage Area (where the siren is located) while the test is taking place must have with them and wear two layers of hearing protection.
