12 GeV Upgrade

Last week was very productive for the 12 GeV Upgrade project, with major achievements realized in both Halls B and C. In Hall B, the energization of the Torus magnet achieved full current of 3,770 Amps on Friday afternoon, Nov. 4. Mapping of the magnet field then commenced, and, once complete, the Torus will be powered down and installation of the remaining detectors will restart.

In Hall C, while the Q2 magnet was being prepared for service on the Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS), Jefferson Lab staff and university collaborators installed the drift chambers on the detector stand within the SHMS shield house. The Physics Division convened the Experiment Readiness Review committee to examine Q2 and the other two magnets (Q3 and Dipole) coming from the same vendor. The committee assessed the design, fabrication, installation, protection systems and operational procedures for the magnets, and concluded that these support safe and efficient magnet operation.

The Dipole magnet was delivered to Jefferson Lab and installed on the SHMS carriage. Due to the weight of the Dipole, the in-house crane was inadequate and special preparation was required. The subcontractor who transported the Dipole from the Norfolk port to the site had to provide a mobile crane capable of handling the load; this was anticipated and a custom lift plan was approved well in advance. The crane was carefully maneuvered inside Hall C. The crane lift path took it across the SHMS structure, which required several handrail sections to be removed to provide clearance. The Dipole was placed on the lower yoke without incident. Hall C staff completed installation of the upper yoke steel and strong-back around the magnet.

Because of its size, the Dipole could not be fully assembled prior to shipment to the lab. The final connection to its cryogenic control reservoir will now begin in the hall. With two of the three Hall C superconducting magnets built in France now installed, work will continue with the acceptance tests and commissioning. Also, during the first week of November, the Q3 magnet was wrapped, crated and shipped out from the factory in France. This, the last of the five SHMS magnets, is now on its way to Jefferson Lab.

The Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformations show how a Green's function translates between gauges. These relations have been previously deduced in coordinate space. In a new paper, members of the Theory Center re-derive these in momentum space by using a spectral representation for certain Green's functions, valid in QED. This simplifies the demonstration that the transformations between covariant gauges form a group in any number of dimensions. In a further paper, it is shown that this procedure enables key equations of the theory to be evaluated explicitly as Feynman-like integrals even in a strong coupling limit in both the spacelike and timelike regions of Minkowski space. This is a step towards understanding the strong dynamics that controls the confinement of quarks and gluons in QCD.

    Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

End Of Daylight Saving Time Can Be Deadly
The end of daylight saving time leaves many feeling fatigued, which causes safety risks both at home and in the workplace. Some things to keep in mind when switching back to standard time are:

    • Fatigue: Studies suggest that it takes people who work traditional hours several days to fully readjust their sleep schedule after the time change. While it may seem a welcome gift to get an extra hour of sleep as opposed to losing an hour in the spring, there is a physiological consequence to changing our clocks. Don’t be surprised if you feel a bit sluggish during the first week.
    • Accidents: Evidence suggests that time changes increase safety problems. Be aware of the increased risk of accidents in the period immediately following the time change.

    Computing and Networking Infrastructure

IT Division Conducts Survey of Computer Systems
As part of an overall initiative to improve cybersecurity across the enterprise, the Department of Energy is currently rolling out a plan to deploy multi-factor authentication (MFA) to protect data and systems. MFA usually combines a pin or a password with some kind of hardware token or card, which makes it more difficult to compromise an account. Jefferson Lab already has MFA rolled out to protect certain types of sensitive data/systems, such as those on the business services network. In order to comply with the current DOE initiatives and align with best-business practices, the laboratory will be enhancing its MFA implementation using an approach that will minimize the impact to the mission while reducing risk. As part of the process, the IT Division is conducting an analysis to better understand the Jefferson Lab computing and network environment. The next step in the analysis is a survey of all Jefferson Lab computers connected to the network. If you haven’t yet taken the survey, or for more information, see the linked memo.

IT Maintenance Planned for Nov. 15, 5-7 p.m.
The IT Division is planning a maintenance period for 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15. During this time, there may be a couple of short internet outages, while network devices are reconfigured. The Zimbra mail servers will suffer a short outage while they are rebooted to finalize patches and install updated certificates. Finally, Windows and Linux patches will be released to CUE-managed desktops and servers. There may be short outages overnight while these servers are rebooted to finalize patch installation. Plan on rebooting your Windows or Linux desktop no later than Friday, Nov. 18, to finalize patch installation. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk@jlab.org or x7155.

    Announcements

Military Veterans: Here’s Your Chance to Help Recruiting Reach Out to Fellow Service Members
The Human Resources recruiting team is hoping to expand its outreach to military veterans by providing general information about our veteran staff members on the Jefferson Lab Careers page, such as a group photo and mention of staff members' combined years of service. If you are interested, the group photo of military veteran staff for this effort will be taken on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at noon in the CEBAF Center atrium. Following the photo, veterans may pick up their honoree cupcake, view the service poster and sign the Veterans Day honor sheet. If you have any questions about this activity, contact Kathleen Wyrich at wyrich@jlab.org. Cupcakes for the Veterans Day salute will be available in CEBAF Center at 11:30 a.m. and will be delivered to the MCC, Bldg. 85, conference room after 12:30 p.m. to accommodate veterans working on the Accelerator Site who aren’t able to get to CEBAF Center for the group photo.

Subcontracting Officer Technical Representative (SOTR) Training Offered
Sign up now for Subcontractor Officer Technical Representative Training (GEN020), which will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in a conference to be determined. Registration can be found in Jefferson Lab's Learning Management System.

Place Orders by Nov. 18 at Quark Cafe for Thanksgiving Desserts
The Quark Cafe is taking Thanksgiving dessert orders now through Nov. 18. Selections include pumpkin, southern pecan, sweet potato and French silk pies and pumpkin cheesecake. The deadline for orders is 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18. Order forms are available in the cafeteria and include the prices, pick up date/time options and handling instructions. Orders must be picked up and paid for on Nov. 22, 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., or on Nov. 23, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Jefferson Lab Offering Financial Planning Workshop
TIAA-CREF will host a Financial Planning Lunch and Learn Workshop geared toward women who are interested in learning more about planning and controlling their long-term financial well-being. The entire Jefferson Lab population is welcome to attend this free workshop; however, the main focus of this event will be women at any point in their careers. See the full memo for the registration link and more information.

    JAG Fall Food Drive Underway
The Jefferson Lab Activities Group has positioned food drive donation drop boxes at several locations around the lab. Unopened, canned or boxed, nonperishable food items may be put into the boxes (no glass). All donations will be collected on Friday, Nov. 18, for delivery to the Peninsula Food Bank. Food donation drop boxes are in the ARC, SSC, CEBAF Center, and TED lobbies. If you have questions about the food drive, contact Dan Young at dyoung@jlab.org.
