Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A collaboration between researchers in the Theory Center and the Center for Accelerator Science at Old Dominion University has computed the energy spectra from Compton scattering within a linear plane wave model for an incident laser beam. In contrast to previous nonrelativistic calculations, the use of the relativistic Klein-Nishina scattering cross section allows the electron beam energy spread and emittance effects on the spectrum to be accurately calculated. The method is used to predict the energy spectrum of radiation passing through an aperture for the proposed Old Dominion University inverse Compton source.

Watch for Deer on Roads when Driving
Through December, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reminds all motorists to watch for deer on and near the roadways. According to VDOT, this is the time of year that deer tend to move about more – especially in the early morning and into the evening - when they are most difficult to see. In Virginia, drivers have a 1-in-94 chance of hitting a deer, according to insurance industry claims data for July 2015 through June 2016. VDOT offers these tips to avoid hitting a deer:

• Deer generally travel in groups. If you see one deer on, near, or crossing the road, watch out for others nearby;
• Deer are creatures of habit – if you see them in a certain spot, expect to see them again in that vicinity;
• Drive the speed limit or reduce your speed when you see deer-warning signs;
• Be on the lookout for deer at any time, but especially between dusk and dawn; and
• Use bright headlights when possible and appropriate.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

IT Division Conducts Survey of Computer Systems
As part of an overall initiative to improve cybersecurity across the enterprise, the Department of Energy is currently rolling out a plan to deploy multi-factor authentication (MFA) to protect data and systems. MFA usually combines a pin or a password with some kind of hardware token or card, which makes it more difficult to compromise an account. Jefferson Lab already has MFA rolled out to protect certain types of sensitive data/systems, such as those on the business services network. In order to comply with the current DOE initiatives and align with best-business practices, the laboratory will be enhancing its MFA implementation using an approach that will minimize the impact to the mission while reducing risk. As part of the process, the IT Division is conducting an analysis to better understand the Jefferson Lab computing and network environment. The next step in the analysis is a survey of all Jefferson Lab computers connected to the network. If you haven’t yet taken the survey, or for more information, see the linked memo.

D&I Council Seeks Jefferson Lab Community Input
Lab Director Hugh Montgomery and the D&I Council are asking for your input on a survey to assess awareness of the value of diversity and inclusion following the last year of effort in this area at Jefferson Lab. This survey will be compared to the initial one conducted in 2014. It is hosted by SurveyMonkey, and your input is anonymous. You may access the survey here. Jefferson Lab Fire Protection Manager Earns Kudos for Advice in Extinguishing Terrorist-Set Blaze
Ed Douberly, Jefferson Lab’s Fire Protection and Access Control manager, recently received a letter from the U.S. State Dept. extending its deep appreciation for firefighting advice Douberly provided to help extinguish a dangerous sulfur fire set by ISIL terrorists in Mishraq, Iraq. Douberly drew from his years of experience and knowledge to provide advice critical to safely extinguishing the blaze and keeping coalition forces out of harm's way while they battled the fire. Place Orders by Nov. 18 at Quark Cafe for Thanksgiving Desserts
The Quark Cafe is taking Thanksgiving dessert orders now through Nov. 18. Selections include pumpkin, southern pecan, sweet potato and French silk pies and pumpkin cheesecake. The deadline for orders is 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18. Order forms are available in the cafeteria and include the prices, pick up date/time options and handling instructions. Orders must be picked up and paid for on Nov. 22, 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., or on Nov. 23, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

JAG Fall Food Drive Underway
The Jefferson Lab Activities Group has positioned food drive donation drop boxes at several locations around the lab. Unopened, canned or boxed, nonperishable food items may be put into the boxes (no glass). All donations will be collected on Friday, Nov. 18, for delivery to the Peninsula Food Bank. Food donation drop boxes are in the ARC, SSC, CEBAF Center, and TED lobbies. If you have questions about the food drive, contact Dan Young at dyoung@jlab.org.
