12 GeV Upgrade

In-place assembly and testing are proceeding on Hall C's three newest superconducting magnets in the Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS). The Q2 quadrupole magnet has reached 106 percent of the current required for the maximum SHMS momentum (11 GeV/c). Stable operation for 11 GeV/c physics has been demonstrated, and final acceptance tests are underway. Welding of the cryogenic helium pipes between the dipole magnet and its service can has been finished and leak-checked, and the first-pass weld of the nitrogen lines is done. The dipole helium circuit has passed its pressure test. Leak-checks of the Q3 magnet vacuum system are underway. Pressure-testing of the Q3 helium and nitrogen circuits will come next. At the same time, connection and checkout of the Q3 and dipole instrumentation systems are moving forward.

With all but one of the SHMS detectors in place, a cosmic-ray trigger has been set up to collect signals from the detectors and exercise the data-acquisition hardware and the event-reconstruction software. Stands for the beam pipe downstream of the recently installed target are in place, and much of the vacuum pipe has been erected. Limit switches and wiring to allow remotely controlled rotation of the SHMS is being prepared.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A series of recent articles, including this one and another, investigates new types of functions describing hadronic structure: parton “quasi-distributions.”  These specify how the hadron's three-momentum is shared among its quark and gluon constituents. Patterns are proposed showing how the distributions change when the hadron momentum increases, and how they approach the usual parton distribution functions in the limit of infinite momentum.

    Truncated Site-Wide Alert Text Messages
It was noted that the Jefferson Lab Site-Wide Alert text messages, as received on Sprint phones, were truncated (incomplete) during the winter storm that took place Jan. 7-9. This issue is being investigated. The situation seemed to be isolated to the Sprint phones, but if you have a different cell phone service provider and received truncated messages, contact Deb Magaldi at x5102 or magaldi@jlab.org.

    Announcements

Test of Public Address System Set for Today at 5:30 p.m.
Emergency Management Team staff will conduct the recurring test of Jefferson Lab’s Public Address System – the live audible announcement feature – available through the lab’s Cisco phones today at 5:30 p.m. No actions are required or expected from members of the lab community with this test. The test interrupts any in-progress call on a Cisco phone, with active calls placed on "hold." As soon as the PA announcement has ended, the Jefferson Lab person may re-activate the call. If you have any input regarding this test, email Tina Menefee at emergmgr@jlab.org.

Red Cross Blood Drive Scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 24
The next American Red Cross Blood Drive will take place Tuesday, Jan. 24, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F113. New and repeat donors are encouraged to attend. Walk-ins are welcome.  All participation is greatly appreciated. To schedule an appointment, visit redcrossblood.org and enter Sponsor Code: TJNAF. You can also schedule an appointment by contacting Johnie Banks at jbanks@jlab.org or x7539. Visit the website for donation eligibility requirements.

    Quark Cafe Update
The subcontract with Eurest for cafeteria, on-site catering and vending services has been extended to March 30. Until then, current service levels and pricing will remain unchanged. Jefferson Lab is in the process of evaluating proposals for services to start on April 3. Once that contract is awarded, any service changes that diners can expect under the new contract will be announced. Keep in mind that due to a DOE policy change, the laboratory will no longer subsidize these services, so changes to menu selection and pricing are likely. The transition between contracts will also likely require a break in cafe services, with no cafe or catering service offered on Friday, March 31.

Jefferson Lab Travelers and Travel Coordinators: Critical Foreign Travel Suspense Dates
As required by the contract, this is a reminder that all foreign travel requests are to be submitted to DOE at least 30 days prior to travel through the Foreign Travel Management System (FTMS). Only in extenuating circumstances are we to submit a request within 30 days of departure. However, be aware, that there is no guarantee of approval, as it is DOE’s prerogative to deny, without justification, any late requests.

    Update: Travel to France
Travel to or through France requires strict adherence to the requirements implemented by the U.S. State Department in 2016. As a reminder, all transportation details (including ground transportation) are required to be reported for both business and personal days to, from, or within France (Train, Bus, Rental Car, Flights, etc.).
Subsequent to the initial guidance, DOE is now permitting Jefferson Lab on-site DOE Counter Intelligence Security Officers to conduct the briefings, prior to departure, for travelers staying 10 days or longer. This replaces the need to schedule an appointment in Paris. Failure to follow the requirements or provide the requested information could result in denial of country clearance and jeopardize future travel. Visit the Jefferson Lab Travel - Foreign Travel webpage for posted information.

Jefferson Lab Travelers: Check Your Itineraries for Errors
All travelers are asked to review travel itineraries regularly to ensure arrangements are done correctly to avoid increased and potentially unallowable costs. Pay special attention to dates of travel, reservations and destinations in the review.

    Science Bowl Volunteers Still Needed
Jefferson Lab's Science Education staff is seeking volunteers to help with the Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 4, and the Virginia Regional Middle School Science Bowl on Saturday, March 4. Volunteers Sought to Help with Engineering/STEM Career Days on Feb. 23-24
Jefferson Lab will be participating once again in the Engineering/STEM Career Days on Thursday, Feb. 23, and Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, 8 a.m.-1 p.m., at Newport News Shipbuilding. Science Education is seeking engineers, scientists and technicians who are willing to talk to high school students about their careers. The day is formatted as such: The high school students will rotate through four preassigned tables, each staffed by one of our JLab volunteers. For each 15 minute rotation, our staff will talk about their careers, backgrounds, etc. Upon completion of the final rotation, students will stay at that table to participate in a design challenge (which Science Education will provide). Then event will conclude with lunch! If you are interested in volunteering or have questions, contact Brita R. Hampton at hampton@jlab.org by Wednesday, Jan. 25. Volunteers may sign up for one day or for both days.
