12 GeV Upgrade

Hall B and Hall C saw increased work activities in preparation for the demonstration of each Key Performance Parameter for the 12 GeV Upgrade Project and commissioning runs scheduled for this spring. Hall B completed the installation of the Central Time of Flight and High-Threshold Cherenkov Counter detectors. Work continues on the instrumentation/controls and gas systems needed to support detector operations. Hall C saw progress in both the Dipole and Q3 magnet installations and commissioning. Significant items of note were the completion of the pressure and leak testing of the liquid nitrogen and helium circuits for the Q3 magnet; both systems passed.

Last Chance to Apply for the JSA Postdoctoral Research Prize
The prize will be awarded to the top candidate with a record of accomplishment in physics, a planned high impact Jefferson Lab physics program, proposed use of the research grant, and promise of further accomplishments in the Jefferson Lab research fields. Don't Forget to Nominate a Colleague for the 2017 Outstanding Nuclear Physicist Award
JSA is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Outstanding Nuclear Physicist Award, which recognizes individuals who have made outstanding and sustained contributions, including technical achievements, to experimental and/or theoretical research related to the nuclear physics program at Jefferson Lab. The biennial award consists of a certificate and a $10,000 honorarium, presented to the honoree at the Jefferson Lab Annual Users Group meeting. Deadline for submissions is Jan. 31. Nominations Are Being Accepted for the 2016 JSA Thesis Prize
The Users Group Board of Directors will award the 2016 JSA Thesis Prize for the best Jefferson Lab-related thesis. Theses completed during the calendar year 2016 are eligible, as well as theses completed during the last quarter of 2015 (if they haven't been submitted before). Nomination deadline is Feb. 24. JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program Now Taking Applications
The JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program contributes to addressing the nation's commitment to grow our future science leaders and researchers by providing the environment and financial resources for graduate students to work alongside Jefferson Lab researchers. Funded by the JSA Initiatives Fund, the fellowships will be awarded to qualified doctoral students at SURA member universities for research related to Jefferson Lab. Each fellowship will provide the awardee's home institution with a $10,000 stipend. The awardee's home institution must agree to provide the remaining research assistant stipend from institutional or research funds. Application materials are due by March 10. Apply Now for Sabbatical and Research Leave Support at Jefferson Lab
The JSA/JLab Sabbatical and Research Leave Support Program enhances research opportunities for faculty through access to Jefferson Lab facilities and interaction with Lab researchers and users, strengthens the teaching and research capabilities of universities through faculty involvement, and strengthens the research programs of Jefferson Lab by attracting "new blood" and integrating university faculty members in the laboratory's programs. The program, funded by the JSA Initiatives Fund, provides living expenses up to $1,500 per month for up to nine months to qualified faculty members to relocate to the Hampton Roads area to conduct full-time research at the Jefferson Lab while on an approved sabbatical or research leave. Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

Sum rules for light-by-light scattering provide a basis for calculations of key contributions to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment, which is important for upcoming experiments at Fermilab and J-PARC. The simplest of such sum rules is tested with currently available data on two-photon collisions in this new paper. This is shown only to be satisfied if the measured large four pion production cross section is dominated by its helicity-two component.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Reminder: Heed Work Safety Signs, Cones and Stanchions in the Test Lab High Bay
In the Test Lab High Bay, the walking paths and boundaries of radiologically controlled areas (RCAs) and radioactive material areas (RMAs) may shift or change dramatically from day-to-day or even from morning-to-afternoon. Crane operations (to move equipment across the High Bay area) and alignment work (using lasers) have become regular activities. For everyone’s safety, this means all staff, Users and visitors must be observant and heed all signage and postings. In particular:

• Watch for footpaths closed for crane operations and detour when necessary;
• Watch for “Lasers in Use” warnings around Alignment work; and
• Make sure to stay out of the permanent and temporary RCAs in the Test Lab unless you need to be in them, have current RadWorker I training, and are wearing your personal dosimeter.

Expect Occasional Noise in CEBAF Center Room F113
If you have a meeting scheduled in CEBAF Center room F113 between now and June 30, you may hear occasional noise from the ongoing construction project in the Data Center next door. The noise is generated as contractors re-engineer the room for Jefferson Lab's needs. The noise can be distracting, so groups are asked to schedule an alternate meeting location if the noise is expected to be an issue. If you have any questions about this notice, contact Michele Solaroli at x7751 or Russell Mattox at x7477.

RadWorker I Class Offered on Jan. 30
The Radiation Control Department will hold a Radiation Worker I (SAF801C) class on Monday, Jan. 30,  9 a.m.-5 p.m. (location TBD).
