12 GeV Upgrade

The final pieces of the 12 GeV Upgrade of Hall C are now in place, and only a few demonstration tests of the newest magnets remain to be done. The dipole magnet passed all of its low-current tests, clearing the way for the last detector (Noble Gas Cerenkov) to be installed in the Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS). The large concrete wall and roof sections of the SHMS shield house were then put in place, and technical staff began preparing the hall for electron-beam operations. Problems with the Q3 magnet's power supply were resolved, and the magnet has been ramped to currents well above the highest momentum setting of the SHMS. The dipole magnet has been successfully tested to just above the operating current. Instrumentation issues have slightly delayed the final high-current testing, but the performance of the magnet so far has met or exceeded expectations. Once the magnets pass the few remaining tests, Hall C will be ready to receive its first 12 GeV era electron beam and demonstrate its 12 GeV Project Key Performance Parameter (KPP).

Deadline Approaching for JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program Applications
The JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program contributes to addressing the nation's commitment to grow our future science leaders and researchers by providing the environment and financial resources for graduate students to work alongside Jefferson Lab researchers. Application materials are due by March 10. More information and application requirements can be found online.

Apply Now for Sabbatical and Research Leave Support at Jefferson Lab
The JSA/JLab Sabbatical and Research Leave Support Program enhances research opportunities for faculty through access to Jefferson Lab facilities and interaction with Lab researchers and users, strengthens the teaching and research capabilities of universities through faculty involvement, and strengthens the research programs of Jefferson Lab by attracting "new blood" and integrating university faculty members in the laboratory's programs. Application materials are due by March 31. More information and applications requirements can be found online.

    Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

    New Theory Center work uses neutron-proton scattering data to determine the nucleon-nucleon force up to next-to-next-to-leading order in nuclear lattice effective field theory. The first full error analysis ever performed within this approach is presented, and the impact on the Monte Carlo simulations of light nuclei studied. The results obtained are an important milestone in the quest to accurately describe properties of nuclei from first principles.

    Deadly Dozen Unsafe Acts that Can Lead to Accidents
    As you know, accidents don’t just happen, there is always a cause. To avoid accidents, you must recognize the unsafe act or condition and correct it. Here is a list of a dozen common unsafe actions that can lead to preventable accidents:

    1. Unauthorized use or operation of equipment;
    2. Failure to secure or tie down materials to prevent unexpected movement;
    3. Working or operating equipment too fast;
    4. Failure to issue warnings or signals as required;
    5. Using defective tools or equipment;
    6. Removing guards;
    7. Improperly using tools or equipment;
    8. Standing in an unsafe place or assuming an improper posture (as in lifting);
    9. Servicing moving equipment;
    10. Riding equipment not designed for passengers;
    11. Horseplay; and
    12. Failure to wear the proper personal protective equipment.

    Announcements

    Jefferson Lab Director Honored with Energy Secretary Award
    Hugh Montgomery was awarded The Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award by the Secretary of Energy earlier this year. This honor highlights Montgomery’s contributions to the research programs at the DOE national labs, both as a world-leading researcher and as a more than 30-year DOE national laboratory employee. Read more about the award here.

    ODU Physics Department Open House Set for March 18
    The Old Dominion University Physics Department will hold an open house on Saturday, March 18. The event will include lab tours, an exhibit of meteorites, planetarium shows, and a variety of hands-on activities and live demonstrations. The event is free and open to all ages. R.S.V.P.s are not required, but are appreciated. For more information, the R.S.V.P. utility, parking garage locations and a campus map, visit www.odu.edu/physics.

    Tornado Warning Siren Test Set for 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 3
    Jefferson Lab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 3. Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise. Individuals planning to be in the Central Materials Storage Area (where the siren is located) while the test is taking place must have with them and wear two layers of hearing protection.

    Secure Document Drop for Documents to Shred in CC
    A secure drop-off box for documents that have been generated for Jefferson Lab business and need to be shredded has been added to CEBAF Center. The box is located in the Staff Services hallway behind the front desk and is available Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The contents will be emptied by the subcontractor, Shred-It, every four weeks. The next pickup date is Thursday, March 2. Shred-it boxes are currently located in the Support Service Center, SSC-3; CEBAF Center, CC-1; and the Technology and Engineering Development Bldg., TED-1. Each box can hold approximately four full banker boxes. If you have any questions about this service or have larger quantities to dispose of, contact Mike Lewellen at lewellen@jlab.org.

    Reminder: Usage of the Central Material Storage Area
    The Central Material Storage Area, or CMSA, is the centralized location for Jefferson Lab’s refuse and recycling compacters, scrap material collection containers, storage of bulk materials, hazardous waste and used oils, material handling equipment, and diesel and E-85 fuel for lab vehicles. The CMSA is the fenced and gated area located east of the Test Lab (Bldg. 58), at the end of BCS Road. Access to this area is controlled. Individuals needing temporary access should press the call button on the card reader station, and a guard will respond to provide temporary access. For more information, see the full memo.
