DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program Is Accepting Applications
The goal of the Office of Science Graduate Student Research program is to prepare graduate students for science, technology, engineering or mathematics careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission. The program provides supplemental funds for graduate awardees to conduct part of their thesis research at a host DOE laboratory in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist within a defined award period, typically three months-one year. The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16.
JSA Young Scientist Program Now Accepting Applications
The JSA Promising Young Scientist program is accepting applications for the 2017-2018 academic year. The program, which is funded by the JSA Initiatives Fund, will assist candidates to prepare for faculty interviews by traveling to a host institution to present a talk and participate in a mock interview. The candidates will also have an opportunity to teach a class session. The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, May 12. For more information, see the full announcement.
Photo Trivia for Records and Information Management Month
Becky Mosbrucker is the week two Starbucks gift card winner in the Raiders of the Lost Archives Photo Identification Trivia! Week three is here, and the Jefferson Lab Archives staff need your help to identify a new batch of people, places and things! Each photo on display will correspond to a field on forms provided or online at http://www.jlab.org/IR/archives/RIM2017.html. Complete and drop off the paper forms in the box, which will be available during the entry period. Forms with the most correctly completed fields will be placed in a weekly drawing for a Starbucks gift card, courtesy of the Jefferson Lab Archives staff. For those who are unable to identify any of the individuals or objects, you can still play along and fill out the forms to the best of your knowledge. At the end of April, all forms received will be eligible for the last drawing gift card.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics
Polarization measurement of a particle from its decay is a powerful method to test the production dynamics and to search for new physics. It often depends, however, on the choice of a specific frame and/or coordinate system. A general procedure to find all rotation-invariant observables was derived in a new paper for an arbitrary decay process, which can serve as a robust test of the detector acceptance and help the analysis of experimental data.

Home Safety Notice: Recall of Ryobi Electric Blowers
One World Technologies is recalling 121,000 Ryobi Electric Jet Fan Blowers sold in the United States. While Jefferson Lab does not use these types of blowers, this recall notice is being provided to employees as hazard awareness at home.
The recall indicates that the plastic fan inside the blower can break, causing the fan blades to be discharged from either end of the blower tube, posing a laceration hazard. These blowers were sold December 2015-December 2016. The recall involves the “Ryobi 8amp Electric Jet Fan Blower” with model number RY42102 and a serial number between EU15401D170001 and EU16239N999999. The model and serial numbers are printed on the data label on the bottom of the blower. The blower is black and green with “RYOBI” printed on the side of the blower. “8amp JET FAN” is also printed on the side of the blower.

New Email Filtering Service Coming Soon
The IT Division is in the process of implementing a new email filtering service for the Jefferson Lab community. The new service is called ProofPoint, and it will replace the current solution (WatchGuard). ProofPoint has performed well in pilot testing and provides more filtering capabilities. Proofpoint is planned to be deployed on May 1, 2017. Look for further information as the deployment date approaches.
IT Maintenance Day Set for April 18, 5-10 p.m.
The IT Division is planning a maintenance period for 5-10 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18. During this time, division staff will be making a change to the central file servers, but no issues are expected. If you have any problems connecting to the M:\ drive (sgroup drive) after the planned maintenance period on Tuesday, notify the IT Division Helpdesk at x7155 or helpdesk@jlab.org. The Scientific Computing group's name server will be replaced with a new server; this should have a minimal effect on farm jobs. For those who use the VPN system: the VPN server will also be replaced with an updated server; connections to the VPN after the upgrade will cause a local client download and update. Also, division staff will release updates to core Common User Environment software, such as Firefox and Flash, to all CUE-managed desktops. Finally, Linux and Windows patches will be released to all CUE-managed desktops and servers. Central web servers and other servers will be rebooted during the maintenance period or overnight to finalize these patch installations. Plan on rebooting your Windows or Linux desktop as soon as practical, but no later than Friday, April 21, in order to finalize patch installation on your system. Students Use Jefferson Lab Website to Prep For Annual Tests
Thousands of Virginia students are expected to flock to Jefferson Lab's Science Education website in the coming weeks – just as they have done each spring for the past several years – as they prepare for the Virginia Standards of Learning examinations. Jefferson Lab’s website hosts the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Science and Math Practice Tests. The practice tests include questions and answers provided by the Virginia Department of Education from as recent as spring 2015, and going back to 2000. Read more at the link.
Vendor Fair Set for April 20
All members of the Jefferson Lab community are invited to the 2017 Small Business Outreach Fair. More than two dozen vendors and several manufacturing representatives will be set up in the CEBAF Center lobby, and in rooms L102 and F113 – showing off their wares, handing out samples and give-aways, and answering questions about their products and services. The event is set for Thursday, April 20, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Refreshments will be available in room F113 throughout the event. For more information, contact Jami Anthony or see the calendar entry.
Blood Drive Success!
Jefferson Lab donors made a significant contribution to the American Red Cross with the April 11 Blood Drive! A total of 30 productive units were collected, slightly missing the lab’s goal of 38. Johnie Banks extends a sincere thank you to everyone who participated with this blood drive and congratulates participants for a job well done!
‘Imagine the Future’ Women in Entrepreneurship Conference Set for April 27
An inaugural conference aiming to connect like-minded women entrepreneurs or aspiring women entrepreneurs to build business momentum and expand their networks will feature key local and national women innovators and Virginia Tech Faculty presenting on a myriad of topics. The conference is sponsored by Virginia Tech's Pamplin College of Business, Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, and the Virginia Tech Hampton Roads Center, Newport News.
