12 GeV Upgrade

Following the successful completion of the Hall C Key Performance Parameter beam run, staff and Users are analyzing the data taken to understand the performance of the new detectors. Efforts include drift chamber timing calibrations, analysis software improvements, and scrutiny of pulse-height distributions from the photomultiplier-based detectors. The energy resolution of the Super High Momentum Spectrometer calorimeters has already been shown to be at least as good as predicted when they were designed. Counting rates observed in all detectors are helping to determine whether additional shielding might be useful. The 12 GeV Project team continues to prepare for the upcoming DOE SC OPA Review.

JSA Young Scientist Program Now Accepting Applications
The JSA Promising Young Scientist program is accepting applications for the 2017-2018 academic year. The program, which is funded by the JSA Initiatives Fund, will assist candidates to prepare for faculty interviews by traveling to a host institution to present a talk and participate in a mock interview. The candidates will also have an opportunity to teach a class session. The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, May 12. For more information, see the full announcement.

DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program Is Accepting Applications
The goal of the Office of Science Graduate Student Research program is to prepare graduate students for science, technology, engineering or mathematics careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission. The program provides supplemental funds for graduate awardees to conduct part of their thesis research at a host DOE laboratory in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist within a defined award period, typically three months-one year. The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16.

Photo Trivia for Records and Information Management Month

Chris Hayes is the week four Starbucks gift card winner in the Raiders of the Lost Archives Photo Identification Trivia! Week five is a fun one - each photo displayed is a person who works at the lab. Take a moment, look at the photos, and identify your co-workers from their photos - some were taken over 30 years ago. Each photo on display will correspond to a field on forms provided or online at http://www.jlab.org/IR/archives/RIM2017.html. Complete and drop off the paper forms in the box, which will be available during the entry period. At the end of April, all forms received will be eligible for the last drawing gift card. The last entry period ends Tuesday, May 2. Winners will be announced in the subsequent JLab Weekly Briefs. Prize can be picked up from the library. If you have any questions about the trivia challenge, contact Kim Edwards at kindrew@jlab.org.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

Chiral effective field theory (chiEFT) provides a description of low-energy nuclear dynamics in terms of nucleons and pions, consistent with the symmetries of QCD. Recent new work has performed the first chiEFT calculation of neutrino-deuteron inclusive cross sections, including loop corrections in the neutral and charge-changing weak currents. The results are within about 2 percent of, albeit consistently larger than, those obtained in conventional calculations, based on meson-exchange phenomenology. While they are not expected to have impact on the 8B neutrino spectrum deduced by the SNO measurements, these results should nevertheless be helpful in reducing the theoretical error in this inferred spectrum.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Environmental Smoke Control
Jefferson Lab prohibits smoking inside and outside its buildings, except in designated smoking areas. These areas are located at least 25 feet (7.5 meters) from any building entry/exit, outdoor air intakes, and operable windows. Smoking is also prohibited outside the property line in spaces used for business purposes.

Why does the lab do this when other businesses and organizations don’t? In 2000, the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) initiated a global Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Program. This changed the way we think about buildings and communities, how they are planned, constructed, maintained and operated. The lab participates in the LEED program to demonstrate our commitment to the local community. By making small changes, using less water, reducing energy consumption, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, we each make a big difference. Part of the LEED program describes acceptable “Environmental Smoke Control” criteria by which we can demonstrate our effort to remove secondhand smoke from recirculated air in our buildings.

LEED is now the most widely used third-party verification certification for green buildings, with around 1.85 million square feet being certified daily. Projects pursuing LEED certification earn points across several areas that address sustainability issues. Based on the number of points achieved, a project receives one of four LEED rating levels. We maintain our LEED rating in order to contribute to a better tomorrow. If you would like more information on the LEED Rating criteria, visit: http://www.usgbc.org/leed.

Reminder: New Jefferson Lab Email Spam Filter Rolls Out on Monday, May 1
On May 1, the IT Division will implement ProofPoint, a new email filtering service (spam/virus filter) for the Jefferson Lab community. ProofPoint will replace Jefferson Lab's current service, WatchGuard; it has performed well in pilot testing and provides more filtering capabilities. If you have any questions or concerns about the deployment of this new service, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk@jlab.org or x7155.
