Chief Technology Officer Discusses Boron-Based Special Materials at Event
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Jefferson Lab is among the dozens of research institutions and commercial enterprises to receive a TechConnect Innovation Award at the 2017 TechConnect World Innovation Conference taking place in Washington, D.C., this week.
The awards identify the top 15 percent of submitted technologies as ranked by the TechConnect Corporate & Investment Partner Committee. Innovation rankings are based on the potential positive impact the submitted technology will have on a specific industry sector, according to TechConnect. Innovations are submitted from global academic technology transfer offices, early-stage companies, small business innovative research (SBIR) awardees, and government and corporate research laboratories.
Accepting the award on behalf of Jefferson Lab was Chief Technology Officer Drew Weisenberger. In addition to participating in the technology showcase, Weisenberger is giving a talk today regarding boron-based special materials, the laboratory’s technology being recognized with the Innovation award. Boron is the basis of two patented technologies developed by Jefferson Lab. One is a boron-based nanotube material capable of maintaining its unique properties in extreme environments and another is a construction material that uses the neutron shielding capability of boron for applications in nuclear power, cosmic ray shielding for solid-state electronics, and radiation therapy.
Jefferson Lab is a Department-of-Energy-funded basic nuclear physics research facility that adapts its cutting-edge research technologies that can be applied to developing nano materials, neutron shielding and other applications.
Weisenberger and Joe Scarcello, Jefferson Lab’s CFO and Business Operations manager, are representing Jefferson Lab’s technology transfer programs at the TechConnect World Innovation Conference that continues through May 17. Jefferson Lab is open to discussing collaborative activities to bring these and other Jefferson Lab technologies to new applications.
