Top Virginia Middle and High School Teams Will Advance to Nationals in Washington, D.C.
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Around the nation, and across the commonwealth, middle and high school students are forming their teams, coordinating with their coaches, and tackling the rigorous process of preparing for the 2018 regional Science Bowl tournaments. Now is also the time for teams to register for their regional events.
The U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl® is a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Middle and high school student teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. These teams face off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.
“Registration for the regional tournaments is just getting underway,” notes Christine Wheeler, Jefferson Lab science education administrator and coordinator for the two regional Virginia Science Bowl tournaments.”This is the time to get all of the necessary information, review the requirements, and to get registered.”
The Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl will be on Saturday, February 3, 2018; and the Virginia Regional Middle School Science Bowl will follow on Saturday, March 3. Both events will take place at Jefferson Lab. A maximum of 20 teams may register for each of Virginia’s regional tournaments, so getting registered early is important. The top team from each of these events will advance to the National Finals of the National Science Bowl® set for April 26-30, 2018, in Washington, D.C.
“This event opens a door of knowledge and opportunity for students," Wheeler says. “Participation in the National Science Bowl® encourages them to explore STEM fields outside of the classroom, helping them to excel academically and preparing them to become future technology and innovation leaders.”
The Department of Energy created the National Science Bowl® in 1991 to encourage students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields. Over the years, more than 275,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl®, which is one of the nation’s largest science competitions.
