Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics
The nucleon's electromagnetic form factors describe the spatial distributions of electric charge and magnetic moment in the nucleon and provide the most basic information about its finite size. Recent theoretical work has successfully calculated the electromagnetic form factors from first principles, using a new method combining Chiral Effective Field Theory and dispersion analysis. The results can guide the analysis of electron-nucleon elastic scattering experiments at low momentum transfers at Jefferson Lab and MAMI at Mainz, as well as the extraction of the proton charge radius, whose value can be compared with atomic physics measurements and is presently the subject of an intense controversy ("proton size problem").

Radioactive Material at Jefferson Lab - Part 2
This week, the focus is on proper handling and storage of radioactive material (RAM). All RAM brought to the Jefferson Lab campus is subject to RadCon-specified policies and controls. When handling RAM, remember that it may only be handled by Radiation Worker I-trained individuals; it is not be transported via personal vehicle; and it may not be disassembled, removed from the site, or moved from one RMA to another without RadCon concurrence. When not in use, RAM must be stored in a designated radioactive materials area (RMA). When storing RAM, consider the following:
- Decontamination or disposal is preferred over long-term storage.
- Outdoor storage is discouraged.
- Radioactive material should be stored in a manner that reduces combustible loading.

A Jefferson Lab training session for any new Subcontracting Officer Technical Representatives (GEN020) or anyone who wants a refresher class will take place Wednesday, Nov. 29, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in room 53 of the Support Service Center, Bldg. 28. Sign Up Now! Volunteers Still Needed to Help With Nov. 1 JAG Fall Festival and Picnic
The Jefferson Lab Activities Group will host a Fall Festival and Picnic on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 3-6 p.m., on the SURA Residence Facility field. All Jefferson Lab staff, students, users and their families are invited to the event, which will be filled with food, fun and prizes. In order to make this event enjoyable for everyone, the JAG needs volunteers to help with the event. Volunteer positions, in one-hour shifts, are posted on the JAG webpage. Three Open Classes for Ethics Training for Supervisors/Managers in November
To ensure the laboratory maintains the highest standards of ethical conduct, and to create a deeper awareness of the roles and responsibilities of members of management, all supervisors and managers must complete an in-person training session as part of the annual Standards of Ethics and Code of Conduct training by the end of the calendar year. Currently, there are three open classes offered in November. If you have not already, you may see all open class dates and register for the class, Maintaining an Ethical Culture Inside & Outside Jefferson Lab (MGT105), in the Learning Management System.

Volunteers Needed for 15-Minute Role-Model Visits With BEAMS Students
Jefferson Lab’s BEAMS program – Becoming Enthusiastic About Math and Science – for fifth-grade students is ramping up for the new school year. An important part of the BEAMS experience is Role Model Visits; and Science Education staff is seeking lab volunteers to provide these 15 minute Role Model visits with the students. During the visit, the volunteer discusses their job, education and job training with 12-15 students. For more information and to volunteer, see the full memo.
Calling All Veterans: You're Invited to Participate in the Veterans Day Recognition Display
In recognition of Veterans Day, veterans of military service are invited to submit a photo of themselves in uniform for inclusion in a collage to be displayed in CEBAF Center prior to Veterans Day. This will be similar to the one displayed the past years. If you submitted a photo in the past, the photo will be used again this year with the information you previously provided. If you want to submit a new photo, feel free to do so. Submit photos to Mike Robbins by Nov. 3. Remember to include your full name, branch of service, and years of service. If you do not have a digital copy of your photo, employees can bring in a picture to CEBAF Center, room C222 to be scanned.
