An important issue in low-energy nuclear weak transitions is whether the nucleon axial coupling constant gA is quenched in the nuclear medium relative to its value in vacuum. Shell-model calculations indicate that a quenching of gA ranging from 20 percent in light nuclei to 30 percent in heavy nuclei is needed in order to reproduce observed beta-decay and electron-capture rates in these systems. However, a new study based on realistic nuclear interactions and axial currents, and carried out with quantum Monte Carlo methods, shows that this problem be may be partially resolved by correlation effects, which are ignored in the shell-model approach.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Fire Protection
Jefferson Lab’s Fire Protection Program is outlined within the ES&H Manual Fire Protection Supplement. It outlines the lab's fire protection and suppression systems and the capabilities consistent with the “highly protected risk (HPR)” status designated by the insurance industry. HPR status requires adherence to the highest quality risk mitigation tactics, where both the frequency and severity of loss is addressed and mitigated using installation, smoke alarms, water hydrants, and sprinkler systems. Jefferson Lab’s Fire Protection Program provides procedures and information necessary to ensure safety. The objectives of the program are:

  • Minimize the likelihood and consequence of occurrence of a fire related event;
  • Provide a level of safety protection consistent with “HPR” class of industrial risks; and
  • Meet or exceed the requirements of DOE Order 420.1C Facility Safety; DOE-STD-1066-2012 Fire Protection using a graded approach for a non-nuclear facility and for leased facilities; and related DOE directives.

Incorporating fire safety into facility planning and operations, and performing maintenance activities minimizes the risk of loss from fire and its related hazards. Everyone at Jefferson Lab plays a role. If you have questions regarding this important safety program, contact Tim Minga at x7310.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

IT Maintenance Period Set for Tuesday, Oct. 17
The IT Division has scheduled a maintenance period for 5-10 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17. During this time, the VDI environment will be down while the underlying management environment is upgraded. VDI should be back up and available no later than 10 p.m. Updates to Core Common User Environment software, including Acrobat Reader, will be released to all Windows systems. Windows and Linux patches will be released to all CUE-managed systems. Plan on rebooting your desktop system no later than Friday, Oct. 20, to finalize patch installations. If you have any questions or concerns about the planned maintenance, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk@jlab.org or x7155.

Changes to Lab-Provided Cell Phones and Data Cards
Starting this month, staff who carry lab-provided cell phones or cellular data cards will need to have them re-approved annually. This renewal process is being undertaken to certify the need for the phones on an ongoing basis and manage costs associated with telecom contracts. If you carry a lab-provided phone, you will receive an email asking you to complete an online renewal form in the coming weeks. You will need to complete the form to avoid an interruption in service. If you have any questions or concerns about this process, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk@jlab.org or x7155.

Adobe Products End of Life
Through scanning of Jefferson Lab-managed systems, the IT Division has discovered numerous outdated Adobe products on-site. These outdated versions are a security risk and should be replaced as soon as possible. If you have an Adobe product installed on your Jefferson Lab system, visit Adobe's End-Of-Life page and search for your product name and version number. This information can be found in the Help menu of your Adobe product. All Adobe products that have reached their 'End of extended support' date should be replaced.

For Adobe Reader, you can install the supported version on your Windows machine from the Control Panel under Programs and Features, 'Install a program from the network'. All other Adobe products that were purchased, and are associated with a license key, must be purchased again if they are beyond their support date. Please visit Adobe's product catalog webpage - http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog.html. This purchase should be made with a Jefferson Lab credit card, or you can submit a Purchase Request (PR) with the appropriate product name and version number.
