The first global QCD analysis of the quark transversity distributions in the nucleon has been performed, using a new Monte Carlo method based on nested sampling and constraints on the isovector tensor charge gT from lattice QCD. A simultaneous fit to the semi-inclusive Collins asymmetry data is compatible with gT values extracted from a comprehensive reanalysis of existing lattice simulations, in contrast to previous analyses which found significantly smaller gT values.  The contributions to the nucleon tensor charge from u and d quarks are found to be Δu = 0.3(2) and Δd = -0.7(2) at a scale Q2 = 2 GeV2 .

Extending the Life of Lithium-Ion Cell Phone Batteries
The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science recently posted a research highlight that offers new insights into how the source of electrons in lithium-ion batteries, the cathode, fails. It turns out that the materials that make up the negative electrode, or cathode, in most common cell phone batteries lose structural integrity after repeated charging and discharging. Scientists revealed that high-voltage cycling is the driving force leading to cracks inside grains that make up the cathode, causing the cathode to fail.

The results suggest mitigation of intragranular cracking requires a stable structural framework of the cathode material and carefully controlled cycling conditions. For high-voltage applications, the material’s chemistry and structure must be adjusted to minimize internal grain strain during charge and discharge cycling. In the end, these findings could generate new strategies to design stable, safe lithium-ion batteries with high energy density and a long cycle life.

Announcements

Hermann Grunder Recognized by IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society
Jefferson Lab’s founding director is being honored “for far reaching contributions to accelerator science and technology.” Grunder has been selected as one of two recipients of the IEEE NPSS Particle Accelerator Science and Technology (PAST) Award, which will be presented at the 2018 International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC’18) in Vancouver. Reception Honoring Fulvia Pilat Set for Nov. 8
After seven years at Jefferson Lab, Fulvia Pilat is leaving for her next chapter. Join us in celebrating her contributions to the lab at a reception being held in CEBAF Center room F113 on Wednesday, Nov. 8 in the afternoon, 3:30-5 p.m.

JLab Salutes Military Veterans on Friday, Nov. 10
In recognition of Veterans Day, Jefferson Lab invites staff military service veterans to stop by the CEBAF Center lobby anytime between 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10. Service members are invited to check out the display, enjoy a cupcake, and sign the service honor sheet. Copies of the service photos poster will also be available for pickup. A group photo of military veterans will be taken at 1 p.m. in the CEBAF Center lobby. For veterans working on the Accelerator site, cupcakes will also be delivered to the MCC, Bldg. 85, conference room after 1 p.m. If you have any questions about this activity, contact Mike Robbins at mrobbins@jlab.org.

Jefferson Lab Archives Seeks T-shirts
The Jefferson Lab archives is seeking to complete its collection of Jefferson Lab T-shirts. If you have T-shirts from Safety, Science Bowl, Open House, the 1995 Run-A-Round or other Jefferson Lab events, and you are willing to donate them, email history@jlab.org with a description of the items you'd like to donate.

JLEIC Lunch Event Series Launched
Learn more about Jefferson Lab’s efforts toward an Electron-Ion Collider from the scientists who are making it happen. This weekly brown bag lunch series is aimed at scientists of all levels. Bring your own lunch and curiosity to CEBAF Center room A110 on Tuesdays at noon. An informal panel of accelerator and nuclear physicists who are working on the Jefferson Lab EIC (JLEIC) will be available to discuss the details of the project. For more information about the JLEIC Lunch Series, contact Rik Yoshida at ryoshida@jlab.org or x6828.
