Members of the media are invited to join our distinguished guests for the ceremony dedicating the recently upgraded facility.
What: The Department of Energy and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will hold a dedication ceremony for the Jefferson Lab $338 million 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade project, which tripled the original design energy of the laboratory’s Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility.
Who: The keynote will be delivered by the Honorable Paul M. Dabbar, Under Secretary for Science. Other notable dignitaries will also be in attendance.
When: Wednesday, May 2, 2018
Where: CEBAF Center, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, 12000 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, Va.
Time: Tour - 1 p.m.; Dedication Ceremony - 2:30 p.m.
Arrive no later than 2 p.m. to be seated for the dedication ceremony. A press availability will be offered immediately following the program. The open press portion of the event, including the program and availability, should conclude by 4 p.m.
In addition, a tour with select speakers will be offered prior to the program. Requirements for the tour is advance registration, a government-issued photo I.D. and closed-toe, low-heel shoes. Registered members of the press should arrive on-site by 12:30 p.m. to participate in the tour.
Credentials: Contact the Jefferson Lab Communications Office by noon on Tuesday, May 1, if you plan to attend any part of the event, or if your news agency would like to receive photos of the event. The dedication will take place in an auditorium.
Background: CEBAF, a DOE Office of Science User Facility, is the world's most advanced particle accelerator for investigating the quark structure of the atom's nucleus. Completed on time and on budget, the $338 million upgrade has tripled CEBAF's original operating energy and commissioned a new experimental area dedicated to providing insight into one of the universe’s great mysteries: why the fundamental constituents of matter, quarks, may never be found in isolation. The newly upgraded CEBAF enables a diverse and compelling program of experiments proposed by the lab’s nearly 1,600-member community of scientists who come to Jefferson Lab from around the world to conduct their research.
