Users discussed international collaboration at Jefferson Lab Users Organization Annual Workshop and Annual Meeting in June
More than 150 members of the Jefferson Lab Users Organization traveled to Jefferson Lab from around the world on June 24-26 to participate in the 2019 JLUO Workshop and Annual Meeting. This year’s meeting was focused on the role of international collaboration in accomplishing future science.
The JLUO is comprised of more than 1,600 member scientists who conduct research at Jefferson Lab. The meeting provides the lab’s energetic User community with the opportunity to collaborate on research, interact with colleagues and students in the field of nuclear physics, take up concerns with laboratory leadership and the JLUO Board of Directors and learn about research related to nuclear science.
The theme of the 2019 program was "JLab Science Around the World.” A sub-theme was featured each day of the event, including topics such as “an international user community”, “reaching the full potential of 12 GeV”, and “from 12 GeV to the EIC - toward CD-0.”
As usual, the meeting featured informative science presentations, including the new format of flash talks, which included two science talks in just 10 minutes. Presentations were also made by the nuclear physics program representatives from the primary funding agencies, and the annual business meeting was conducted. The organization also welcomed its new chairperson, as Ohio University’s Julie Roche passed on JLUO leadership to Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María’s Will Brooks.
In the annual poster competition, which allows students in CEBAF-related research areas to feature their projects, three student posters took the top prizes: Patrick Barry, North Carolina State University; Burcu Duran, Temple University; and Sajini Wijethinga, Old Dominion University. In addition to a cash prize, each winner also received travel support for presenting their work at a scientific meeting.
The awards continued with the presentation of the 2018 Jefferson Science Associates Thesis Prize, which went to Kurtis Bartlett, and the 2019 JSA Postdoctoral Prize, which was awarded to Andrea Signori.

The JLUO Workshop and Annual Meeting and the prizes awarded during the meeting are supported by the JSA Initiatives Fund Program, a commitment from the JSA owners, SURA and PAE. Initiatives Funds support programs, initiatives, and activities that further the scientific outreach, promote the science, education and technology of the Jefferson Lab and benefit the lab's extended User community in ways that complement its basic and applied research missions.
