12 GeV Upgrade

In-tunnel testing of the 12 GeV cryomodule known as C100-8 has resumed. Installation and final alignment is complete for the beamlines in the main "racetrack" of the accelerator, including closing locations used for access to the beam switchyard, injector, Hall D and southeast stub. Final vacuum hookup and alignment of the beamlines to Halls A, B and C are nearly complete. Final alignment of the Hall D beamline has been completed upstream of the shield wall/door at the top of the ramp. The arc 1 dipoles have been operated with the new arc 1 box supply. The arc 2 box supply is almost ready to connect to the dipole magnets. Box supplies for arcs 3 through 6, LAM1C, and the Hall A beamline are on site and in various stages of installation and testing. Delivery of the 20 Amp trim power supplies has resumed. The final procurements for the stripline beam position monitor electronics are about to go out. Installation of the Personnel Safety System for Hall D continues.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A new paper explores the use of twisted boundary conditions in extracting the nucleon mass and the binding energy of two-baryon systems, such as the deuteron, from lattice QCD and lattice effective field theory calculations. By choosing clever boundary conditions, one can reduce finite volume contamination of the deuteron binding energy by a factor of 10-20 for moderate volumes. Using the experimentally determined phase shifts and mixing angles, the reported analysis determines the expected energies of the deuteron states over a range of lattice volumes for a selection of twisted boundary conditions and numerically confirms the analytical observations which are speculated to hold for arbitrary N-body systems.

Engineering

The alignment group has been busy throughout the Jefferson Lab site. The initial alignment of the installed Hall B beamline components in the beam switchyard has been completed up to the shield wall. The final alignment of the Hall A beamline components, again in the BSY, is nearing completion. In Hall D, the Forward Drift Clamber located in the solenoid is undergoing initial alignment. Additionally in Hall B, the Pre-Shower Calorimeter detectors are being fiducialized relative to the forward carriage. In the group's magnetic measurement facility, the YB magnet refurbishment is being carried out.

Junk Drawers and Nine-Volt Batteries
Just about every home has a drawer that holds a collection of all the little pieces of life that don't have another home. Often, uncapped batteries are also tossed in the drawer. This is a particularly dangerous situation in the case of nine-volt batteries. When the battery's top terminals are bridged with some metal - a paper clip, keys, etc. -  there is a flow of current through the connecting material. Resistance in the material can generate sufficient heat to cause flammable items in the drawer to catch fire.

The simple way to prevent this from happening is to keep all batteries out of the junk drawer. Another solution is to cover batter terminals: keep the original plastic cap over the terminals of nine-volt batteries, seal off the terminals temporarily with electrical tape, or place the batteries in an intact plastic bag. These simple steps can protect you, your family and your coworkers from battery-initiated fire.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

CNI Maintenance Period Set for Tuesday, Dec. 17, 5-7 p.m.
The IT Division's CNI group is planning a systems and network maintenance period for Tuesday, Dec. 17, 5-7 p.m. During this time, there will be a short network outage while equipment failover is tested and a configuration upgrade is performed. There will also be a voicemail outage, and all Management and Information Systems applications will experience a short outage while system patches are installed. A Symantec Anti-Virus software upgrade will be pushed out to all managed systems; this update should be transparent, but a complete virus scan will be performed when installation is complete. Also, Firefox, Thunderbird and Adobe Flash player updates will be released to all Windows systems, and Windows and Linux patches will be released to all desktop systems. Plan on rebooting your desktop system later in the week or, at least, prior to your departure for the holiday break. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about these or other computing-related topics, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155

Test of Public Address System Will Intermittently Impact Live Calls
Also during the CNI Maintenance Period on Tuesday, Dec. 17, the lab will test the public address capability of its Cisco IP phones. The test will commence at 5:30 p.m. and will be broken into two parts: a lab-wide test of the public address system, followed by building-specific tests in each of the following areas: ARC, SSC (Bldg. 28), CEBAF Center (Bldg. 12), EEL (Bldg. 90), Test Lab (Bldg. 58) and the TED (Bldg. 55). When the public address system is activated, all "in progress" phone calls will automatically be put on hold. Each set of tests should last 1-2 minutes and could include up to two separate voice announcements from the speaker on Cisco IP phones. As soon as an announcement is completed, you may access and resume any interrupted calls.
