12 GeV Upgrade

The accelerator was able to deliver tune beam to the Hall A dumplet. Work is progressing to provide continuous wave beam to Hall A later this week. The Hall C Super High Momentum Spectrometer effort continues to see multiple work activities in this congested area; workforces include subcontractors and Jefferson Lab employees, so remember to be aware of your surroundings at all times in these areas. Although the concrete subcontractor has finished their work, the structural subcontractor is still working on the work platform, and work will soon begin inside the SHMS to install shielding. Work in the Hall D Tagger area continues; the goal is to complete the subsystems needed to allow tune beam to this area in the 3rd Quarter of FY2014.

Physics

The first beam on a physics target in Hall A was achieved Saturday evening, March 22. Data taking with beam will continue in Hall A for spectrometer and system checkout through to the end of March or early April.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Fire Safety History
The Triangle Shirtwaist incident is remembered for its shocking brutality: On March 25, 1911, a ferocious fire broke out at a factory on the ninth floor of a building in New York City's Greenwich Village. Some of the exits and stairwells had been locked to prevent workers from taking breaks or stealing, leaving many unable to get out. As a result, 146 workers, mostly young immigrant women, died within 20 minutes.

Most Jefferson Lab staff are probably unaware of this tragedy, but many of our fire safety codes originated in response to this event, including engineered controls, such as fire doors with "panic hardware" (i.e. the bars that open when pushed) on protected stairwells, fire resistant finishes and construction. Today, the number of exits is also based upon building occupation, and sprinkler systems and the limits for combustible/flammable materials in an area are all outgrowths of this event.

Even so, we all must be vigilant to prevent similar incidents. Keep your areas clean and clear and make sure the routes to the fire exits are unobstructed. If you see a potential issue that should be addressed, work with the Safety Wardens and ESH&Q staff to help keep our work environment safe.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

BlueJeans Videoconferencing Now Available; Training Offered
The new BlueJeans Videoconferencing system provides multimedia collaboration and videoconferencing to Jefferson Lab staff and users. The IT Division will host a BlueJeans training session on Friday, March 28, 11 a.m.-noon in CEBAF Center room F113. BlueJeans staff will conduct the training remotely. There's no need to create a BlueJeans account, because IT has done the work for you. To log in, visit the Jefferson Lab BlueJeans site, and use the 'Login' button with your Jefferson Lab username and password. For tips and tricks on using BlueJeans from anywhere, visit the Jefferson Lab BlueJeans webpage. Have a look around and bring questions to the training session. If you have any questions about this announcement, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Windows XP Systems Require Upgrades By April 1
Microsoft announced the End-of-Life for Windows XP systems some time ago. Since last fall, the CNI group has been working with staff and users with XP systems to upgrade them to Windows 7 in anticipation of this date. For various reasons, some systems may not be upgraded to Windows 7 by March 31. Those systems will be moved onto a new and more secure network segment on March 31. This network segment will only have access to the Windows terminal servers (jlabts) and the public Linux servers (jlabl1-4). All other access will be denied, including access to the central file servers (J, K, L, and M drives). In the coming weeks, CNI staff will be contacting staff and users with Windows XP systems to determine when they can be upgraded to Windows 7. If a system cannot be directly upgraded, it will either be converted to a thin client connecting to a central Windows 7 Virtual Machine, or it will be moved to the secure network segment described above. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Radiation Worker Training Classes Offered
The Radiation Control Department will be offering a full-day in-person RadWorker-I class on Tuesday, April 1, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. A RadWorker-II class will be offered on Tuesday, April 8, 9 a.m.-noon. You can sign up for these courses through Jefferson Lab's Learning Management System. If you would like more information or need assistance signing up, contact Maya Keller at x6021.

Vote for Your Favorite Jefferson Lab T-Shirt Design
Vote for your favorite submission in the 2014 Jefferson Lab Annual T-Shirt Contest. There are 15 different designs to choose from this year. Voting will remain open until April 4. The winning design will be unveiled at the lab's annual Run-A-Round.

Colloquium: Tools, Techniques, and Technology Connections of Particle Physics
Come learn about the "Tools, Techniques, and Technology Connections of Particle Physics" from Marcel Demarteau, High Energy Physics Division, Argonne National Lab. Particle physics shares with other basic sciences the need to innovate, invent and develop tools, techniques and technologies to carry out its mission to explore the nature of matter, energy, space and time. The story of invention in particle physics and the interplay between different fields of science and society will be illustrated in this colloquium. At the same time, particle physics, and curiosity driven fundamental research in general, faces a number of significant challenges. Possible paths forward that could advance scientific discovery and accelerate the pace of innovation in an effective manner will be presented. The public lecture is set for 3 p.m. on April 2 in the CEBAF Center auditorium. Coffee and cookies will be served in the CC lobby beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Pressure Systems Awareness Training Offered
Two SAF130A, Pressure Systems Awareness training sessions will be held on March 21. One begins at 9:30 a.m. in ARC room 231/233, and the other is at 1 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F224-225. Registration is available through the Learning Management System. If you need this training, register and make plans to attend one of these sessions.

Student Projects, Volunteer Mentors Needed for High School Interns
Six outstanding high school students have been selected to participate in the lab's High School Summer Honors Program, which will be held June 23 - Aug. 1. Critical to the success of their internship experience are projects for the students and mentors who can oversee one or more students as they carry out their work. The students are currently in the 11th and 12th grades and have expressed interest in pursuing scientific and technical careers. Lab scientists, engineers and other technical managers who are interested in serving as a mentor to high-achieving high school students and have a project, or any number of small projects that can be accomplished over the summer, are asked to contact Brita Hampton with a description of the work to be assigned. If you have questions email or call her at x7633. She needs ideas or proposals by May 1.

Tracking Thomas at Jefferson Lab
Little Thomas is visiting all corners of the Jefferson Lab campus. If you can identify his location this week, email Kandice Carter with your guess. Guesses are accepted through Friday.

Christian Whalen and Baylee Thayer correctly guessed the location for March 19. Honorable mentions go to Elaine Zuchowicz, Dick Owen, Jared Martin, Michael Haddox-Schatz, Becky Mosbrucker, Robert Martin and Ryan Bodenstein. Check out Tracking Thomas on flickr for a better view of his last location and this week's new mystery photo.
