Free-Electron Laser

Several staff participated in and officiated at the 17th Pan-American Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation Conference and workshops hosted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD. The meeting was co-chaired by NIST, Cornell University and Jefferson Lab. The meeting has been a focus of activity, particularly for the past two months. Jefferson Lab contributed a talk and two posters for this major meeting in the accelerator-based photon science field.

Also, one of the FEL's student interns, Anne Watson, received a pledge of travel support from the organizers of the 35th International Free-Electron Laser Conference, FEL 2013.

A review article summarizes the current status of spin-averaged and spin-dependent parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the nucleon. Representative examples of unpolarized and polarized PDFs and their errors are given, as well as a list of open questions in global QCD fitting. The paper also discusses how future facilities, including collider and fixed-target experiments (such as those planned at Jefferson Lab at 12 GeV), may impact our knowledge of PDFs and reduce their uncertainties.

Facilities Management and Logistics

The first floor of the North Pedestrian Walkway between the Technology and Engineering Development building and the Test Lab building will be closed on Friday, July 5, for tile repair. To navigate between the buildings, individuals must use the Test Lab North Stair entrance and the 2nd floor North Pedestrian Walkway. If you have questions about this work, contact Rebecca Yasky at x7507.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Resolving ES&H Concerns
To ensure your welfare and productivity, JLab has several mechanisms for employees, or anyone who comes into contact with the lab, to report issues potentially affecting the safety of workers, visitors, lab neighbors or the environment without fear of retaliation or reprisal. ES&H Manual Chapter 2310 lists a variety of mechanisms for resolving and reporting ES&H concerns and for preventing similar concerns from occurring in the future. Here is a list of the options you have for resolving an ES&H concern:

  • If possible, resolve the ES&H concern yourself;
  • If you are unable to resolve the concern yourself, refer the concern to your supervisor and management chain using the mechanisms outlined here;
  • You may also consult your Safety Warden, Division Safety Officer, your representative to the Worker Safety Committee, or contact an ESH&Q staff member directly for any ES&H concerns you may have;
  • If you would like to remain anonymous, or if you feel that it is more appropriate, use JLab’s Employee Concerns Program;
  • If one or more of the above steps have not resulted in resolution of the concern, or if you feel that it is more appropriate, you may also use the formal DOE Employee Concerns Management System hotline at 800-676-3267; or use DOE's Differing Professional Opinion process through the form found in DOE Order 442.2.

Once your concern has been addressed, communicate any lessons learned to your staff, co-workers, supervisors and your Division Lessons Learned Coordinator. ES&H Manual Chapter 2310 offers more information on concern resolution.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Site-Wide Network Outage Set for Saturday, July 20
On Saturday, July 20, a site-wide network outage is scheduled for 8 a.m.-noon for equipment upgrades. This outage will disrupt Internet access, wifi and landline telephones. Although the outage window is four hours, the most critical services, which include phones, Internet and central servers, will be restored first. This outage does not include the accelerator controls network itself. For questions about this work, contact the IT Division Helpdesk.

Announcements

Monthly Tornado Siren Test Set for Friday
JLab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m on Friday, July 5. Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren may be heard by anyone within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab. Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise.

Personal Dosimeter Change Out Set for Monday, July 8
Jefferson Lab's semi-annual personal dosimeter change out will take place during the afternoon of Monday, July 8. Be sure to put your dosimeter in its place in the personal dosimeter racks no later than 1 p.m. on July 8. This includes the dosimeters of all staff, students, users and subcontractors. If you need to use your dosimeter during the change out period on July 8, you may exchange it that morning in the Radiation Control Dosimetry Office in Trailer 52B, Room 4, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. If you are leaving for an extended Independence Day holiday break, be sure to put your dosimeter in its rack before departing. If you have questions, contact Becky Mosbrucker, x7236.

Revised General Access Radiological Worker Permit
The Radiation Control group has revised the 2013 General Access RWP to reflect changes to items coming out of the north and south linacs. This new revised GARWP must be signed by July 15 by all Radiation Workers to retain their qualifications and to gain entrance to the accelerator site.

The GARWP is titled SAF801kd, and the change is located in the middle of page 3, item #9. A revision date of June 25, 2013, should be shown in the upper left hand corner of this document. Make sure you refresh your browser once you have opened this document, to make sure you have the newest version. You can locate the document on the web-based training page. If you have questions or concerns, contact Becky Mosbrucker, x7236, or the RadCon Technician cell phone, 876-1743.

Tracking Thomas at Jefferson Lab
Little Thomas is visiting all corners of the Jefferson Lab campus. If you can identify his location this week, email Kandice Carter with your guess. Guesses are accepted through Friday.

Robert Martin and David Anderson correctly guessed the location for June 26. Honorable mentions go to Scott Thompson, Sam Holben, Ron Bartek and Dick Owen. Check out Tracking Thomas on flickr for a better view of his last location and this week's new mystery photo.

JLab Weekly Briefs is an ongoing publication providing information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, free-electron laser, reviews, upcoming activities and special events. Deadline for submission is every Tuesday by 10 a.m. Submit new items to: Public Affairs or contact Kandice Carter at x7263.
