12 GeV Upgrade

In-tunnel testing of C100-9 is nearing completion, and testing of C100-10 is starting. Installation, including vacuum, diagnostics hookup and final alignment, is nearing completion for the beamlines in the main “racetrack” of the accelerator; leak checking for the vacuum system in the west recombiner is underway, and the last few pieces of beam tube are being installed in the west spreader. Completion of the beamlines is now focused on the extraction section, where alignment for hookup of the magnets and separator cavities is complete, and vacuum installation is underway. The radiofrequency waveguide circulator repairs are complete, and installation in the four zones in the south linac has begun. The in-place testing of the new box supply for arc 1 is nearing completion. Installation of the new box supply for arc 2 has begun. The new box supply for the beamline to Hall A will be shipped to Jefferson Lab this week. Retesting of the 4.5 Kelvin coldbox was delayed until Aug. 27, while some problems with the controls were resolved.

Physics

In Hall A, a 100-ton 48D48 magnet from Brookhaven National Lab was delivered to Jefferson Lab last week. It will be used for the 70 millisteradian Super BigBite Spectrometer in Hall A. The Jefferson Lab Program Advisory Committee has already approved four experiments that will use the magnet, and several additional proposals are on the way. The SBS program (mainly for the nucleon form factor experiments) was approved for construction by the Office of Nuclear Physics within DOE's Office of Science in May 2012. The arrival of the magnet presents a significant milestone in the construction program.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

The measured value of the magnetic moment of the muon differs from the Standard Model prediction by more than three standard deviations. The largest source of error in the theory calculation is actually due to a dispersive analysis of experimental measurements that is used to determine the hadronic corrections. This recent work is the first four-flavor lattice QCD computation of these effects, and it confirms the dispersive analysis and the corresponding discrepancy with the Standard Model.

Engineering

The Installation and Vacuum groups continue their work on the 12 GeV Upgrade in the accelerator. In the southwest corner of the main ring, the ZA, YR, YA and YB magnets have all been installed. These magnets all allow multi-pass beams and allow operations to split beam off to the experimental Halls A, B or C, or to continue on for another pass to increase their energy.

Additionally, beamline fabrication, installation, leak checking and pump down have been completed on the east spreader and east extraction regions. Low-conductivity water plumbing installation and beamline installation continues in the west spreader and west extraction, transport recombiner and west arc. Girders were assembled for the Hall D tagger line and the transport recombiner AT line.

Intermittent Power Outages Planned for Test Lab Aug. 29
There will be intermittent power outages at the Test Lab, Bldg 58, on Thursday, Aug. 29, 6:30-9 a.m. The power outages are to simulate power failures and verify the emergency power and controls perform as intended. Two types of tests will be performed - Momentary, which will last approximately 5 seconds to simulate power "blips," and Power Loss, which will last approximately 30 minutes. The power outages will impact the Test Lab High Bay, including the Addition and office areas. The Technology and Engineering Development (TED) building, Cryogenics Test Facility (CTF) and Test Lab North Annex will not experience outages. For questions, contact Rebecca Yasky at 269-7507 or Ken Mitchell at 528-5134.

Travel Tips for Labor Day Weekend
The American Automobile Association projects that an estimated 34 million Americans will travel over the Labor Day holiday weekend, with about 85 percent of those travelers taking to their cars. With so many vehicles on the road, it's a good time for a reminder on travel safety. The Virginia Department of Transportation recommends these five tips for safe travel:

  • Buckle up;
  • Avoid distractions;
  • Share the road (with bikes and motorcycles);
  • Drive drug- and alcohol-free; and
  • Obey speed limits.

VDOT also offers valuable information about planning your route, along with tips for getting live updates on local travel conditions on its website.

Announcements

Hogan Drive Lane Closed
The right turn lane (exit) on Hogan Drive is currently closed to traffic. Vehicles turning right must do so from the left-turn and straight through lane on Hogan. Newport News street crews are doing work on the right turn lane from Hogan Drive onto Jefferson Avenue. If the right turn lane stays closed through closing time, expect traffic to back up on Hogan as Newport News/SCOT and Jefferson Lab people depart work. To ease congestion, consider the alternate exit via Lawrence Drive south to Jefferson Ave.

Jefferson Lab Graphic Identity Standards & Style Guide Now Available
If you want to know the correct colors or how to properly use Jefferson Lab's logo, a new Graphic Identity & Style Guide is now available online. The guide explains and outlines the design principles used by the lab in order to provide consistent and professional messaging about the lab, its research and its people. In addition to information about the logo and lab colors, the guide provides information about approved PowerPoint templates, the use of Jefferson Lab photos and the designs for business stationery. You can also find the lab's logo and templates webpage here.

Get Fit with Fido!
Want to work out after work but can't because you have to go home and walk the dog? Join the JAG Dog Training Club for a "Get Fit with Fido" class this fall! Class will start on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Support Services Building lobby and will continue through mid-December, except for the week of the Thanksgiving holiday. The workouts will include cardio, strength, balance and stretching, plus dog obedience and agility activities in an hour of non-stop fitness fun. All fitness levels can participate. Dogs must know some basic obedience commands, including sit, down and stay. One dog per person. For more information, contact JAG Dog Training Club Captain, Joyce Miller, x7163.

Next OnTarget Newsletter Scheduled for September
Public Affairs does not plan to issue an August edition of the OnTarget newsletter. The next issue of the newsletter will appear in September. As always, ideas and suggestions for newsletter articles may be sent to Deb Magaldi.
