12 GeV Upgrade

The Accelerator Readiness Review (ARR) Phase 1B was completed on Oct. 24. The committee recommended that the lab seek approval to begin commissioning of the CEBAF accelerator upon the completion of the Hot Checkout process. The ARR process is an independent evaluation of the lab's readiness to begin commissioning. In the upcoming ARR Phases, the ARR committee will return to evaluate the lab's readiness as lab staff brings the experimental end stations online for commissioning. Up next is ARR Phase 2 Hall A, presently scheduled for the second quarter of FY14.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

An Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is being considered as a next-generation facility for nuclear physics in the U.S. and worldwide, and this type of machine presents an exciting prospect for Jefferson Lab after the 12 GeV Upgrade. A "QCD Frontier" workshop was held at Christopher Newport University on Oct. 21-22 to review the EIC physics program in the context of other future high-energy facilities and explore synergies and novel approaches. The common goal of these experimental efforts is to understand the structure of hadrons and nuclei on the basis of the fundamental theory of strong interactions, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The international meeting brought together more than 40 experts in experimental and theoretical nuclear physics and enabled many new contacts between researchers specializing in different energy ranges and reaction channels.

Engineering

The Alignment group has continued to finish final alignment (termed "Step 2B") in the southwest extraction region and southwest transport section. All the septum magnets YA/YR/YB/ZA's in this region have been aligned and all the multiple-pass beam pipes (more than one beam in an individual pipe) have had their final alignment completed. Final alignment of the last recombiner has begun. Additionally, the group has completed Step 2B alignment of the components to the Hall D tagger area. Finally, the group has supported the new installations in the injector region. In other areas, preliminary alignment of the components to Halls A and B has started, and a C-50 cryomodule was fiducialized in the Test Lab.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Fall Insects and small critters
As we move into the cooler fall weather, many people may not realize that insects and other small animals also seek warm winter shelter. Areas that may have been clear of such animals during warmer weather now may have whole colonies of nsects, spiders, animals or reptiles.

Most, if not all, of these creatures would rather avoid humans. However, they will react if trapped or disturbed to protect themselves, and they can lash out at people.

We, as the intelligent half of the encounters, should think ahead about when and where we may find them. Whenever possible, we should leave them alone until the professionals can correct the issue. Generally, in order to obtain professional assistance with an insect or animal problem, you should call Facilities Maintenance or put in a Facilities work request and describe the problem and its location.

If you have direct contact, such as having been bitten or stung, report it to Occupational Medicine immediately at x7539.

Announcements

Last Chance to Donate to United Way Campaign
The United Way annual fundraising campaign at Jefferson Lab ends Friday, Nov. 1. Send or deliver completed forms to Joshua Cameron in CEBAF Center room B214, Mail Stop 12-B. Questions may be directed to Joshua Cameron, x7628.

New Travel Online Booking Tool
Concur TripIt will replace the current Jefferson Lab online booking tool Rearden Personal Assistant on Monday, Nov. 4. A Concur orientation for travel coordinators and users will be conducted on Thursday, Oct. 31, in CEBAF Center room F113, 2:30-4 p.m. Everyone is welcome; no registration is necessary. You can also learn more about the Concur TripIt booking tool by visiting the Travel Reservations webpage.

Try Out New Excess/Re-Utilization Catalog
The Jefferson Lab Excess/Re-Utilization Catalog is now available online. Once on the catalog page, click on a building or location thumbnail to access photos of the excess items stored in that location. Click on any item that you are interested in for a page that gives you basic instructions on how to see the item and instructions on how to request it. Items posted in this catalog are available for Jefferson Lab use only. For additional information, contact Property staff at x6270, x7688 or x7348. This catalog is also accessible via the Excess Catalog tab located on the Property home page.

Bid on Excess Jefferson Lab Property
The Jefferson Lab Property section uses an online auction service to sell excess/surplus lab property. Anyone can bid once they have registered on the site. The only exception is that the person who excessed a specific property item cannot bid on that item.

Monthly Tornado Siren Test Set for Friday
Jefferson Lab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m on Friday, Nov. 1. Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren may be heard by anyone within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab. Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise. If this were an actual Tornado Warning, this message would direct you to take cover immediately in a Severe Wind Take Cover area. The areas for individual buildings can be found online (see "Emergency Evac Plan" for your building).

Tracking Thomas at Jefferson Lab
Little Thomas is visiting all corners of the Jefferson Lab campus. If you can identify his location this week, email Kandice Carter with your guess. Guesses are accepted through Friday.

Jason Willoughby, DeAnn Maddox, Samika Hawkins, Harry Fanning and Debra Brand correctly guessed the location for October 23. Honorable mentions go to Joe Arango, Bobby Lawrence, April Sessoms, Jacob Pomeranz, Marcy Stutzman and Ron Bartek. Check out Tracking Thomas on flickr for a better view of his last location and this week's
