12 GeV Upgrade

In Hall C, the cryo-control reservoir for the Super High Momentum Spectrometer dipole magnet and related hardware was received on-site from the magnet vendor, Sigmaphi, in France. Visual inspection upon receipt was good, and acceptance testing is underway. Hall B is continuing pump-down of the Torus vacuum jacket in preparation for cool-down. The Physics Division will convene an Experimental Readiness Review for the Torus cool-down on June 14.

Publications Training and Refresher Course
Did you know that Jefferson Lab must submit the final, peer reviewed, accepted manuscripts to the Department of Energy? See the link for information on how to do this or come to the next Publications Training and Refresher course on Thursday, July 14, at 2 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F224-225. In this session, authors will learn how to submit manuscripts to the Publications Review and Approval System, how to make recommended revisions to papers during the signature process, and how to add the relevant information once the paper is published. If you plan to attend, contact Kim Edwards at kindrew@jlab.org by Wednesday, July 13.

American Physical Society Dissertation Award in Nuclear Physics Call for Nominations
The award consists of $2,500 and an allowance for travel to the annual Spring Meeting of the Division of Nuclear Physics of the American Physical Society, at which the award will be presented. Nominations are open to any person who has received a Ph.D. degree in experimental or theoretical nuclear physics from a North American university within the two-year period preceding July 1, 2016. Nominations are due by July 1. Nomination information is available on the APS website.

Environment, Health, Safety and Quality

Warm Weather Brings out Wildlife, Insects and Poison Ivy
Jefferson Lab shares its grounds with an array of wild creatures, and recent construction has disturbed the natural habitat of many. Likewise, some of these critters can be disruptive to lab operations and dangerous if confronted – especially when they choose to enter indoor workspaces or undermine structures. For example, groundhogs dig holes in accelerator shielding. Occasionally, snakes are seen near buildings. Stinging insects and spiders can be present indoors and out.

The Environment, Safety, Health and Quality and Facilities Management and Logistics divisions urge everyone to take precautions when working in areas that mimic or overlap the natural habitat of native creatures, especially when working on the Accelerator Site during the summer when many of these creatures are most active. If you come across any wildlife, native poison plants or related circumstances that cause you concern, alert Mike Lewellen, x7169 or lewellen@jlab.org, and follow up by putting in an FM&L Work Request. Do not confront or corner wildlife – FM&L retains the services of a pest control company and can safely deal with your concern.

If you are stung, bitten or are exposed to native poison plants, report to Occupational Medicine and then contact Lewellen to notify him of the location and conditions. Prompt medical care can help prevent infection and complications that could result in unnecessary pain and lost work time. For more information about wildlife, insects and native poison plants, see the full memo.

Upcoming Jefferson Lab Pager Audit
If you carry a Jefferson Lab-issued pager, you will soon receive an email with instructions for completing a brief online audit. This is for one-way pagers and Kyocera Duraplus texting devices and does not apply to cell phones, which will be audited separately at another time. This audit helps the lab to control the monthly recurring cost associated with pagers by identifying those that are no longer needed. If you have any questions about the audit, contact Morgan Anderson, x7799.

IT Maintenance Scheduled for Tuesday, June 21
The IT Division is planning its monthly maintenance period on Tuesday, June 21, 5-10 p.m. During this time, the jlabl1-4 systems will be replaced with newer systems and fully patched. Also, the Jefferson Lab terminal servers will be replaced by newer, better-performing systems. Staff and users will still access the terminal servers by connecting to jlabts. Also, all MIS applications will be down while patches are applied to the central MIS database servers. All MIS applications will be back up by 10 p.m.  Patches to core Common User Environment (CUE) software, such as Flash, will be released to all Windows desktops. Linux and Windows patches will also be released to all systems. Plan on rebooting your Linux or Windows desktop as soon as possible, but no later than Friday, June 24, to finalize the patch installations. If you have any questions or concerns about these maintenance items, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk@jlab.org or x7155.

Microsoft Office 2016 Availability
During the upcoming monthly maintenance period on Tuesday, June 21, the CNI group will release Office 2016 to the site. Once released, Windows desktop users can go to Add/Remove programs to install the software, as it will not be installed automatically on desktops. Note that the group will be installing Office 2016 on the central terminal servers (jlabts) and all new desktop builds. Also, the group will be installing it on the conference room machines as time allows. If you have any questions or concerns about the release of Office 2016, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk@jlab.org or x7155
