Presentations

Featured CEBAF Center Exhibitors:

Cryogenics show at CEBAF Center Auditorium.

Cyclotron Kids
Learn about the cyclotron these teen-agers are building with support from JLab.

University Labs
Look through microscopes and participate in hands-on demonstrations provided by Christopher Newport University, Old Dominion University, The College of William & Mary and Norfolk State University.

Accelerator Science and Technology

Visit with graduate students and representatives from the newly formed Old Dominion University Center for Accelerator Science.

HUPTI
Hampton University Proton Therapy InstituteHear about Hampton Roads' newest cancer treatment facility as the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute gears up to treat its first patients later this year.

The Mariners' Museum

The Mariners’ MuseumLearn about metal corrosion and the methods used by conservators to clean metals. Watch as tarnished silverware is cleaned in an electrolytic treatment tank.

Conservators also present the types of equipment and methods used to deconcrete marine-encrusted artifacts. See a concreted artifact, large pieces of concretion, and various tools used to remove concretion.

Handle a large piece of coal recovered from the USS Monitor. This is a rare opportunity to touch a piece of Civil War history.

NOAA Marine Sanctuary Office
NOAA Marine Sanctuary OfficeLearn more about the conservation work being done to preserve USS Monitor artifacts. View a demonstration on the chemical process of removing salts from marine artifacts, and see how underwater archaeologists work to protect and preserve WWII shipwrecks located off our coasts.

Take part in hands-on activities that show how the absorption of carbon emissions into the ocean affects many shelled animals. Learn how small behavior changes can make a big difference to the health of our oceans. Children create a magnet to take home as a reminder of how important the Oceans are to all of us.

Dilon Technologies
Dilon TechnologiesDilon will display its cornerstone product, the Dilon 6800R Gamma Camera, which is optimized to perform breast-specific gamma imaging. It can also be used for general nuclear medicine applications.

NASA/Langley

NASA/LangleyLearn the history of the Apollo program. What do you know about the Moon? Can rocks tell a story? Hold a piece of the Moon in your hand, and learn more about the Moon!

Virginia Air and Space Center

Virginia Air and Space CenterDiscover how aircraft use energy to overcome the force of gravity and how they are made to adjust from the effect of heat from friction. Explore how aircraft are similar to "natural flying machines" like birds and bats.

Children's Museum of Virginia

Children’s Museum of VirginiaExplore a variety of bubble wands and then create your own. Learn how different designs affect the sizes and colors of bubbles.

Northrop Grumman Technology Group
Northrop Grumman Technology GroupJoin in a live demonstration of Rapidly Operational Virtual Realty (ROVR). This tool allows Northrop Grumman employees to visualize designs in full-scale 3-D.

Virginia First Robots Team

Virginia First Robots TeamThe FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) program teaches students about science and technology using a fun and interactive game that changes each year. See the Team 122 Robot in action!

ODU Modeling and Simulation Center
ODU Modeling and Simulation CenterLearn about the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC), a multi-disciplinary research center of Old Dominion University, and experience an interactive video game.

ECPI
ECPIPractice CPR techniques on mannequins, and see results displayed on a monitor.

Learn about the applications of head tracking to enhance 3-D visualizations and to create a more immersive 3-D experience.

Experiment with the Lego Mindstorms NXT Robot. Modify existing programs and observe the robot's behavior. Add a wireless camera to the robot and establish motion control through a Playstation 3 game controller.

Finally, take a virtual tour of ECPI Island in Second Life and learn about the ECPI iPhone app and iTunes University.

StarGenCo
The StarGen is an axial flux generator that uses several techniques to increase efficiency, reduce overheating and reduce weight. This demonstration will allow you to use multiple sources, including a hand-crank, child's bicycle (sized for a 10 year-old) and an electric drill, to drive the generator and produce electricity.

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)Pick up consumer information fact sheets about energy efficiency and conservation from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Electronic Systems, Inc. (ESI)
Electronic Systems, Inc. (ESI)Learn how to conserve energy and promote sustainability in the office through the use of modern environmentally-friendly technologies.

JLab Exhibits in CEBAF Center
:

Radiation Detector and Imaging Group
The Radiation Detector and Imaging Group develops detector technology for nuclear physics research at JLab and for applications in medicine, plant biology research and homeland security. Examples of detector technology such as photomultiplier tubes, silicon photomultipliers and plastic and crystal scintillators will be on display.

Science Education Hands-on Activities Stations: Detecting the Unseen

Activity #1: Probing the Nucleus
How do scientists know what's inside the nucleus if they can't see it? Probe a clay 'nucleus' with a 'beam' of electrons to discover what's inside.

Activity #2: Ultraviolet Make-and-Take
Ultraviolet light is a form of light our eyes aren't sensitive to, but can be detected using other means. Build an ultraviolet light detector using color changing beads to take home with you!

Activity #3: Is Black Really Black?
Black dye is normally a mix of different colors. Perform a chromatography experiment to separate a black dye into the colors that are hidden within it!

Activity #4: Is White Really White?
White light is actually a mix of different colors. Use a pair of diffraction grating glasses to separate white light into the colors that are hidden within it! Bonus: keep the glasses!

Environmental Services
Watch a presentation on Jefferson Lab's environmental efforts. See how the Lab protects local waterways, land and airways, and learn how you can help care for the local environment.

Industrial Hygiene
Learn about common occupational hazards and how to best manage them. Get a decibel reading for your cell phone's handset volume.

Tech Transfer
The technology developed at Jlab for the private sector is an important element of the lab's mission. Talk to lab staff about the lab’s patents and invention process. See how the lab partners with small businesses in the community.

Recruiting
Learn more about the exciting and unique career and employment opportunities at Jefferson Lab.

Central Helium Liquefier (CHL)
Discuss the operation of the lab's giant refrigeration plant and the super cold temperatures it provides with members of our cryo team.

Data Acquisition Lab
How do nuclear physicists do experiments? What does the data look like? Come interact with the electronics and talk to the scientists and engineers who design the data acquisition systems for all Jlab experimental halls.
