Monthly Report IR Demo FEL Upgrade and Commissioning Project
April 1998

Management

April 1998 was the ninth month for the $3.7M IR Demo Upgrade and Commissioning project. Cost and schedule performance are described in the accompanying Performance Assessment report by Gordon Smith. Highlights for the month include: (1) attainment of the first high average current (1.1 mA) operation of the linac at energies required for the first light demonstration (38 MeV); (2) measurement of cathode lifetimes during mA operation that are sufficient (15-20 hrs.) for the first light demonstration; (3) continued progress in the commissioning of the electron beam diagnostics; and (4) activities required for first light.

CA 221: Scaleable Optical Cavity

All work on the FEL systems centered on getting the optical transport lines complete and under vacuum all the way to the Optical Control Room optical table with all of the interlocks energized for system protection. By the end of the month we had a surrogate HeNe beam transported to the optical table, aligned through the system with all monitors and interlocks operational. Work is beginning on setting up the lasing diagnostic suite. The diagnostic suite must be physically aligned to accept input from both the low power pre-lasing beam as well as the high power lasing action. All local FEL systems controls and diagnostics (excepting these last few optical diagnostics) required for lasing are installed and operational through software. We are prepared to accept the electron beam and begin laser commissioning as soon as the required electron beam parameters have been met.

CA 321: Upgrade Cryomodule System

Four cavities were testedafter grinding equator welds and heavy chemistry. Many showed improvement in quench gradients. Grinding of the other four cavities has been completed. Dog leg coupler tuning fixtures have been completed.

Shield vendor has reported a delay in delivery of ~ 2 months. schedule.

Tuner testing is underway to optimize the fine tuner. Testing will be complete in July and will not impact cost or schedule.
