Monthly Report IR Demo FEL Upgrade and Commissioning Project

May 1998

Management

May 1998 was the tenth month for the $3.7M IR Demo Upgrade and Commissioning project. Cost and schedule performance are described in the accompanying Performance Assessment report by Gordon Smith. Highlights for the month include: (1) continued progress in the commissioning for the linac hardware for the first light demonstration (note added in the final report: first light was obtained on June 15); (2) the Accelerator Readiness Review was held successfully on May 27; (3) the key bunch length diagnostics were installed in the beamline; (4) the optical cavities were readied for the first light demonstration and (5) the first user equipment was shipped from DuPont for the polymers lab and from Armco for the metals lab.

CA 221: Scaleable Optical Cavity

All experimental work was concentrated on the final set-up and installation of the optical cavity for the first light demonstration. Additional design work on scaleable optical cavities was deferred until July when John Foley from MSU joins the project for a sabbatical visit.

CA 321: Upgrade Cryomodule System

Four cavities were ground on equators and irises followed by heavy chemistry. These cavities were then vertically tested. The second set of four cavities were internally inspected and then ground on the equators and irises and followed by heavy chemistry.

The spare valves were ordered for the cavity pairs. Testing of new VAT valves for the FEL module and beam line was completed. The valves passed the test qualification for contamination particulates and vacuum integrity. Final load assemblies are being fabricated. Materialis being ordered for the rest of the HOM loads ceramics.
