FIRST CLASS: MONDAY SEPTEMBER 8

Our modern understanding of Quantum Field Theory (QFT) can be conveniently described using the language of Effective Field Theory (EFT) which is based upon the renormalization group pioneered by the late Ken Wilson. The language of EFT is broadly applicable to all areas of physics research, providing important insights to natural phenomena and also QFT and renormalization.

This course will introduce the general concepts of EFT and aims to provide a survey of current EFTs useful for describing many aspects of the Standard Model, including atomic physics, nuclear and hadronic physics, as well as high energy physics in and beyond the Standard Model. Familiarity with QFT and renormalization will be assumed, however, the course is accessible to those with either a theoretical or experimental background.
