"Tour de Trash"
Hampton "Tour de Trash"
Friday, April 1 from 9 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Do you have an interest in where recyclables go and why some things are not acceptable? What happens to that air conditioner placed curbside? Why put leaves and grass in clear bags? Where can you buy mulch made from yard waste composted from curbside collection? Hampton Waste Watcher's popular semi-annual Tour de Trash is on Friday, April 1st. This tour will answer these questions and more with visits to Hampton's integrated waste management program. Participants are urged to wear comfortable shoes and to bring a bag lunch. Bottled water will be provided. The Tour bus departs Sandy Bottom Nature Park at 9 a.m. for visits to:
- Howmet, an award-winning, environmentally-friendly business
- Tidewater Fibre Inc. that sends our curbside recyclables to markets around the world
- Hampton/NASA Steam Plant that burns household trash to create energy
- The regional compost facility in York County that mulches and sells curbside yard waste
- Hampton's yard waste and scrap processing site
- Bethel Landfill, operated by Waste Management Inc, that takes bulk waste
- Other topics: household chemical dropoff program, curbside setout, pollution prevention & more
Seating is limited. Participants must call 727-1401 by March 25th to reserve space. (A $5 per person deposit is required and will be returned to participants at the end of the tour. Minimum age: 10 years old and children must be accompanied by a parent or supervising adult.) Hampton Waste Watchers is an inter-agency organization formed more than a decade ago to educate the public about environmentally friendly waste practices.
