RiverSmart Tips: Conserve and Protect Water at Home

By sweeping your driveway, rather than hosing it clean, you could save 100 or more gallons of drinking water and keep contaminants (motor oil, animal wastes, etc.) from entering a local creek or river. That's one of ten "RiverSmart Tips" recommended by the River Network. The tips describe things you can do in and around your home to conserve water and help ensure the health of our rivers and the purity of our drinking water.

Here's a list of the TOP 10 RIVERSMART TIPS for some simple things you can do in and around your home to help our rivers. You'll find there are many easy ways you can save water and prevent pollution.
1 1. Repair leaky faucets and toilets right away
2 2. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth and washing the dishes
3 3. Run the washing machine and dishwasher only when they are fully loaded
4 4. Dispose of household cleaners, paint and other chemicals safely
5 5. Sweep off instead of hosing the driveway, patio or sidewalk
6 6. Install water-saving showerheads and high-performance, low-flush toilets
7 7. Fix car leaks promptly
8 8. Take care when changing your car's motor oil and dispose of the oil safely
9 9. Water your lawn and garden only in the morning or evening
10 10. Buy and use environmentally friendly products
