Come join us as Gretchen Halpert describes the fascinating field of scientific illustration.
Topics
include the Rhode Island School of Design Scientific Illustration program, the various fields of
science using scientific illustration, discussion of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators and
artwork by various GNSI members and RISD students. Resource materials will be available.
Science art disciplines include botany, archaeology, astronomy, biology, geology, medical, marine life,
forensic anthropolgy, paleontology, wildlife art, particle physics, nanotechnology and more.

Gretchen has taught medical and natural science illustration for
Rhode Island School of Design/CE and a variety of other organizations
since 1994 and recently joined the faculty at Brown University where
she is co-directing/co-teaching an "Art and Medicine" course.
She earned a BA in Botany from Connecticut College, studied
biological illustration at the University of New Haven Graduate School
and received a certificate in Scientific and Technical Illustration from
RISD/CE. She has been employed as medical research scientist since
1983 and has taught medical and natural science illustration for RISD/CE,
Brown University and a variety of other organizations since 1994. Her
drawings have appeared in books, journals and scientific publications.
Halpert is president of the New England Chapter of the Guild of Natural
Science Illustrators
