JLAB History Archives Project

Photo of the Week, September 24, 2018

In honor of September 24, 1989, the day CompuServe launched the first commercial online service (dial-up!) and public email system, we look at our favorite method of communications: e-mail. This photo, from 2008, features Andy Kowalski (left) and Paul Letta from Computing, Networking and Infrastructure (CNI) Department in front of Sun email servers in use at that time.

Fun facts: In 1988, Microsoft released the first version of Microsoft Mail in 1988 for Mac OS, which allowed users of Apple's AppleTalk Networks to send messages to each other. A second version was released in 1991 for other platforms including DOS and Windows. This has evolved into Outlook in O365, the platform JLab is introducing in FY '19.
