Prompt Radiation Control Policy

Jefferson Lab employees, users, visitors, the general public, and the environment shall be protected from exposure to accelerator-generated prompt ionizing radiation.  Employees must be able to recognize Jefferson Lab prompt radiation control measures and shall respect them accordingly.  Every employee at Jefferson Lab shall assess the prompt radiation hazards and consequences of their work and take action to control them.  Where applicable, a reasoned combination of active, passive, and administrative measures shall be used to maintain personnel exposure to prompt ionizing radiation below applicable limits as stated in the Jefferson Lab RadCon Manual.  Application of active, passive, or administrative measures, or a combination thereof, shall be based upon a documented risk analysis that factors in the hazard level, likelihood of a hazard leading to an event, and the hazard duration.

Prompt Radiation Control Requirements:

People shall be kept away from prompt ionizing radiation.

·       Access to any device that is capable of producing prompt ionizing radiation shall be restricted by use of appropriate administrative controls, barriers, and/or shielding.

·       Access to any area capable of generating a high radiation area, ≥ 100 Mrem/hr, shall be prohibited while the equipment is in operation.

·       Any area capable of generating ≥ 1 rem/hr of prompt radiation shall be an exclusion area using an access control system and interlocks to verify the status of locked doors and gates.  Unauthorized or inadvertent access to such areas shall result in the immediate shut off of the prompt ionizing radiation producing device.

·       In general the design and implementation of barriers, shielding, and interlocks, etc. shall mitigate the personnel risk to the equivalent of a radiologically uncontrolled area, < 5 Mrem/hr intermittent exposure, or less than 100 Mrem/year.  For continuous occupancy, personnel risk shall be mitigated to 0.05 Mrem/hr or less.

Prompt ionizing radiation shall be kept away from people.

·       Methods used in the implementation of this policy are contained in ES&H Manual Chapter 6311 Prompt Radiation Control.
